paulhanley Posted July 7, 2019 Share Posted July 7, 2019 Here's the second half of the match I posted earlier. Bolton 1 Wigan 0 in April 1985 (84/5 season). Things to look out for here include a few missed Bolton chances and also one from Wigan - none other than a rather youthful but portly Tony Kelly complete with long hair. His shot is followed by the one chant the rarely heard paltry and timid Wigan following ever had in those days "Wigan, Wigan, Wigan". The winning goal followed some good play by Brian Borrows. A fierce shot from Simon Rudge hit the bar and as Tony Caldwell was about to pounce on the rebound, Wigan centre back Steve Walsh piled clumsily in to him and Warren Joyce to give away the 78th minute penalty, duly converted by a very cool Jeff Chandler. The clearly distraught Walsh (later of Leicester) and Kelly weren't the only Wigan players to later make good careers out of football. Mike Newell and Paul Jewell also played in this game. With the clock ticking down Chandler then came close to a second with a raking shot from outside the box. As full time approached the Burnden faithful whistled for the ref to end the game and ensure the ale tasted that bit better on Saturday evening. Tony Caldwell had a chance for a second on the breakaway as the regulars can be seeing congregating in the open area of terrace between the Paddock and the Lever End - ready for a quick getaway. Full time was greeted with glee as the familiar sound of the nasal sounding policeman on the PA drifted across Burnden in to the ears of the visiting fans. "This is a message for the Wigan supporters. The Wigan supporters. Please remain where you are. You will be escorted from the ground by the Police". Time for them to start shitting themselves about running the gauntlet up Manny Road while the rest of the footballing world tuned in to Sports Report and James Alexander Gordon on Radio 2. Even when we miss s chance it sounds like the roof is coming off. Also ended up down the rabbit hole watching Endsleigh League Extra stuff, that theme tune comes back to me every now and again! Don't know why they put away fans there as they were commonly in the corner between the Platt Lane and Kippax. Anyway - the handball and Reidy's pen were right in front of us. I was only about 10 at the time but a very enjoyable day. Good to see Stan Anderson on that programme - a man whose character and approach has been long forgotten and was only fleeting in the history of Bolton anyway. And I agree with both you and Mounts - Carter looked exceptional early on. You can see there how he was two footed and seemed to have time, space and confidence. I remember that amazing goal v Spurs. From the late 1960s to 1985 the clubs never played. In the three league fixtures over 1985/6 and 1986/7, Bolton lost 1-4 and 2-3 at home and 2-1 at Gigg Lane. There was little room for hope. The 0-0 draw was therefore a surprise. Cold comfort nonetheless - the point did little to help in the relegation scrap. David Lee misses an absolute sitter in this for Bury! Hadn’t even done my GCSE’s then Some day and night the west ham game was, got there early afternoon, couple of mini buses straight in the Boleyn pub, winnys younger (rip)creating havoc in there, sat in the seats on the side right next to the west ham lot with no segregation, 2 of the biggest black lads sat on row opposite us, loads of trouble down stairs at half time, then the win, and back to our mini bus to find all tyres had been let down, was a late night early morning return to LH. A brilliant night and atmosphere resulting in a trip to Wembley. Their first focus? Should McGinlay have been sent off? Whilst they fawned all over Tranmere, it always felt any praise we got was always given begrudgingly. Enjoyed seeing that win at Upton Park again. They also had David Lee, Phil Parkinson and Tony Cunningham in their team. Think Cunningham joined us the following month and scored two in the first away game I went to at Rotherham, Shaun Goater scored a last minute equaliser that ultimately cost us automatic promotion. Bolton 3 Bury 1 and the game we finally put an end to the jinx Bury had maintained over us since 1985 - six league games, two league cup ties and various Freight Rover games without a win. Including 1-4, 2-3 and 2-4 home defeats. No win over Bury since 1968 (although we didn't play them in the 70s or first half of the 80s. David Reeves scored a quickfire brace in the first half but Stuart Storer sealed it for us in the 89th minute. The sound is poor for the first 30 seconds of this.
