Was that the show on a sunday when they had a weekly sunday league game?

Meldrew, who generally remembers stuff, reckons its a figment of my imagination

I think he wasnt allowed to watch it as sunday afternoon is when he has to do the ironing

Tried uploading a new vid today but it all went wrong. So as a replacement here's one I posted a few months ago. It's the day we ended the jinx Bury had over us in the second half of the 1980s. In fact it was the very last day of that decade, New Year's Eve 1989.

David Reeves scored two goals in as many first half minutes but Bury got one back before half-time. A nervy second half saw Martin Pike and Barry Cowdrill work hard to contain David Lee. And with two minutes to go Stuart Storer headed in a third.

Not sure what era we’re talking but there used to be Granada Goals Extra on a Saturday at 5ish with the full times. No idea why they called it Goals Extra as I don’t think they were capable of showing any footage at that time? Hosted by Elton Welsby and “sponsored by Elf petrols and oils”. Fuck knows why I remember that bit.

On a Sunday it was Granada Match Live and later Soccer Sunday if memory serves me right. Probably ended in 96/97 season, I remember us being live against West Brom at home (1-0, Blake) and Swindon away (2-2?) and probably a couple of others.

Dings were what the Warbies called Lever Enders !

With regard to Warbies - couple of questions

Firstly -  had Don Revie ever heard of them ?  and was it known if he had discussed this with any other managers of that Era ?

Secondly - did they organise themselves and travel together to away games ?

Reason I ask is the one group that always seemed to cause mayhem at away games were the coaches from the Painters Arms - you just knew If they ran coaches it would get interesting ( am thinking  74-78)

I would think Leigh white might help with these questions. Also I’d like to know who the main faces were, seem to remember one was the big bouncer who was on the doors at the waggon and horses or King Billy.  Also are any of the Warbys lot still alive or attending matches? Just checked the Painters was behind the church next to trinity street train train station.

Soccer Night for midweeks as well though for some reason I think that was only League Cup games and then towards the end of the season. I know Stoke away when Shilton played was definitely one.

The Painters was my regular pub in that period & certainly wasn't a Warbies pub. Some of them might have used the Sweet Green which had an older clientele but I don't know that much because they were quite a bit older than most Lever Enders.

The Painters became a main meeting place for Bolton fans before home games,  not least because it was only round the corner to the station, & some names would be taken for away trips then , but I don't recall any coaches ever leaving from there.....it was mostly from The Albion.

Cheers again Paul , noticed Tony Cunningham setting up Bury's goal .Did we sign Cunningham to replace Reeves or was he suffering from Form/injuries.

Any chance of the Wigan away win in the league cup 87/88 please mate.

Yeah I've got the goals from that - although the picture quality is not great on that video for some reason. I've got quite a few wins over Wigan to upload.

I think Cunningham was signed to try to get us over the line in the 90/91 promotion push and it just didn't work. If we'd held on at Rotherham we'd have gone up. But if we'd held on at Rotherham we'd probably never have had Bruce Rioch as boss 18 months later!

Yes it was a great laugh that, the commentator was Alistair Mann, he added great humour to it, having a laugh about some of the players or the 'crowd'.  For me he's the best current Match Of The Day commentator.  Presented Soccer Night and Late Kick Off back in the day.

I always assumed, rightly or wrongly, that the Warbies lot, having their 'dust coats' on for the match came straight from their Saturday delivery rounds. Anyone know differently?

Was it the Warbys mob who snaked up the embankment over Christmas against Blackburn in the late 70s? It was an impressive sight watching it from the paddock as they weaved through the Blackburn fans to the top of the embankment and take the territory away from the Blackburn lot.

Happened twice mate, first one was 81/82 season, the next the following season.

Well known MG lad BW and his merry men led the charge, only youth then but certainly took it to the banjo players. Same the following season, I was amongst them lot for the 2nd dispersal of those with 6 fingers.

Around 89/90 Granada introduced 'Goals Extra' at 5.30pm on  a Saturday. It was Bob Greaves(?) who presented it (badly!) but there were definitely goals on it.  One of our earliest games on there was a 3-0 win over WBA at Burnden with Michael Brown scoring at least one of them.  It had to be edited so quickly, there was probably some bloke barking the details down Greaves earpiece as the goals were being shown.

Would make sense if there were goals on it, was just thinking in terms that we don’t get them so quickly on TV these days so didn’t think for a minute it happened back then, unless it was only a featured game maybe?
