The one that really annoys me is "white army, white army"...we sound like country bumpkins shouting that and it just fades out after about three shouts of it. I think that was a big problem in 85/86 , we signed experienced players who had spent most of their career playing at a higher level and they just didn't have the effect they perhaps should have done. Brian Borrows certainly didn't look out of place in the top flight and Chandler had a good season for Derby , so like you say replacing good hungry players with older heads , I think David Cross averaged around 1 goal in 2 games before he fractured his skull. Yes I think Valentine left during the Summer of 85 too. In 84/5 we'd had Gerry McElhinney (who left part way through to join Plymouth), Valentine and Ray Deakin who also played left back. Neil Berry was also around for the first few months of the season. We signed Mark Came from WInsford part-way through the season and Ray Deakin played there occasionally too. In the one home game I have on video for that season (Wigan, won 1-0, posted it a while ago) it was Deakin and Jimmy Phillips in central defence due to an injury crisis. Given he'd made a handful of appearances after joining from non league Charlie Wright clearly knew he needed major re-inforcements. Certainly nowhere near as good as Sam in his pomp but this was him at 30. Maybe you're right. It wouldn't have harmed us if we'd kept him.
