Cheers Paul. Great header and reminded me of the song we used to sing after his other goal at Plymouth

"I'd walk a million miles for one of your goals, ohhh Sutty!"

I'd forgotten about that song, great memory.  Those were the days when we seemed to have a song or brief chant for every player.  Felgate (Wales No 1), Derek Scott, Winstanley, Ju Darby, Tomo, Warren Joyce, Mark Gavin on the wing, Chandler, Tony Tony Caldwell, George Oghani, Asa Asa Hartford, someone scored a goal John Thomas, etc etc.  And this for players either getting relegated to or playing in Div 4.  When we were top 8 of the Prem you had to be Nolan, Diouff or SKD to have a song.

He was a tall centre back, not "big" in frame like Allardyce, Taggart or one or two more we've had. My recollection of him is that he was pretty hopeless on the ball, decent in the air, could have sound games defensively but was occasionally prone to what Dave Higson described as "dizzy moments".

Yes   I remember him more gangly than anything  , but when he runs back to half way after scoring , he seems to look huge compared to the other players.

It was always great away from home, to have a song for every player.

struggle these days to get 3 decent songs altogether !

Always end up talking songs with my mates after games, we've got fuck all original. And anything new that does get tried is laughed off in usual Bolton way... what's that shit/fuck does he think he is/that's wank.

I'd love a song of our own, an anthem, about the town we represent, the streets and our stadium and the people that have come and gone supporting us, that no other team has.

Just watched it back and you're right he does. I'd say he was about 6 ft 2. Didn't he turn up as manager of Rochdale for a bit after playing for us?

Our chants are indeed pretty shit. The one that really annoys me is "white army, white army"...we sound like country bumpkins shouting that and it just fades out after about three shouts of it. Even innocent old chants like "Oh when the whites go marching in" would help.

Yes he did , I think he owns/Runs a large Garden centre near Southport these days.

Well he played a fair bit of his career at tier 2 level so he can't have been all that bad. I wonder if he still needs a haircut? Mind you we all need a haircut these days!

I think that was a big problem in 85/86 , we signed experienced players who had spent most of their career playing at a higher level and they just didn't have the effect they perhaps should have done.

Yes, true. All very late 20s or in to their 30s and playing out their careers. Plus we lost Brian Borrows and Jeff Chandler - which at the time we overlooked.

Brian Borrows certainly didn't look out of place in the top flight and Chandler had a good season for Derby , so like you say replacing good hungry players with older heads , I think David Cross averaged around 1 goal in 2 games before he fractured his skull.

It was a shame about him. He was combining well with Tony Caldwell. I think that Rotherham game from the first day of 85/6 is the only footage there'll be of him in the white shirt.

We signed Sutton alongside Peter Valentine iirc.  We kept Sutton and let Valentine go to the retirement home for ex Wanderers, AKA Gigg Lane, after only a year.  In hindsight, I think that was a mistake.

Yes I think Valentine left during the Summer of 85 too. In 84/5 we'd had Gerry McElhinney (who left part way through to join Plymouth), Valentine and Ray Deakin who also played left back. Neil Berry was also around for the first few months of the season.

We signed Mark Came from WInsford part-way through the season and Ray Deakin played there occasionally too. In the one home game I have on video for that season (Wigan, won 1-0, posted it a while ago) it was Deakin and Jimmy Phillips in central defence due to an injury crisis. On loan Ian Bailey at left back.

In 85/6 Deakin, Berry and Valentine had all gone which left Mark Came as our lone contracted centre back in May/June 1985 after the retained list. Given he'd made a handful of appearances after joining from non league Charlie Wright clearly knew he needed major re-inforcements. Sutton, Allardyce and Derek Scott (who could also play in the centre) were all experienced newcomers. Was Valentine any worse than those? Certainly nowhere near as good as Sam in his pomp but this was him at 30. Maybe you're right. It wouldn't have harmed us if we'd kept him.

From Charlie Wright's point of view , Sutton and Allardyce should have been more than a match for most attacks in that division , alongside the experience of Derek Scott . Valentine would probably have proved a sounder bet in hindsight , but even Phil Neal dragged his feet before turning attention to the defence.

In 83/4 the defence hadn't been too bad with McElhinney and Valentine in combination most of the time.

It's clear that Phil Neal saw Big Sam as a rival and instead of man-managing him just froze him out. If a fully fit Sam had played more we may have done better... for 85/6 at least.

I think Sam helped Preston to promotion the following season , albeit in Division 4 but it shows there must have been some life left in the old legs.

Yes he'd have been fine if fit. Him and Came would have been OK.

3 games doesn't suggest there was much left

He played more than 3 games for PNE in 86/7 didn't he?
