Darby was a great player for us, up until the Tranmere play off loss...

At his lowest ebb he scored a goal that still gives me goosebumps today.  Southampton away in the FA cup.

Goosebumps just reading this...

Think Josh Vela with a bit more about him and you’re not far off the mark.

Went through a bad patch towards the end of Neal’s rain to the point when a sub was being made, a couple of folk on the paddock were holding up his number.

Stepped up to the plate in our 92/93 promotion season, scored important goals against Bournemouth and Stoke.

Never my favourite player but well worth his place in the team back then but top end of what is currently L1 was his level imo

Agree totally about Darby, was given unfair criticism by some. Vela was ruined by Parkinson, using him as a forward runner just to close down defenders.  When played in midfield with Clough he looked decent.

On our way down to that there London for the CocaCola Cup quarters at West Ham. We stopped at services and got off the coach just as Julian Derby was getting dog’s abuse for a goal he scored which gifted Man U the title that season. Can’t recall the details of who he was playing for or against but it is immaterial, he was on his way, like the rest of us, to watch Bolton take on yet another big club and emerge victorious.

Wheater was virtually untouchable in his time here. Strike leader etc.

I think Vela’s best performances came in that role in League One personally. He was largely ineffective sitting deeper or as a box-box and the games often passed him by.

For a long time I was convinced he was best at full back until pushed further forward in midfield.

Shame he fell off a cliff after that.

Mind boggling really , he was and is Wanderers through and through . Just looking at his stats he reached double figures plus  in 4 consecutive seasons ( including the maligned 91/92 season ) .

The Match in question he was playing for Coventry and scored 2 goals against Blackburn to finally end their challenge that season.

I personally class him in the Bolton legend bracket ( Regarding the lower division seasons ) .

Julian Darby was a prime example of a player being singled out for abuse simply because he was a local lad. In fact, he was one of our better players from that period....always gave it everything, scored a good few goals & even played well in defence a few times.

You can swap Julian Darby for Nicky Hunt in that statement

Maybe not one of our better players, but a consistent performer in one of our best teams

Apologies if this has been posted before.

If not , footage from the infamous 6-1  thrashing at Notts County in the League Cup in 1984.

Wow! I've never seen that since the actual night.  Conceding 5 goals in 7 minutes. 6 down at half time. About 2000 travelling fans who booed them off at half time then spent the 2nd half giving them non stop backing.

MIght sound odd to say it but I enjoyed watching that. A pretty infamous night in our history. I always thought we were 6-0 down at half time but it seems it was 6-1.

I wasn't aware there was any footage of BWFC in 84/5 other than Wigan at home (which I've posted on You Tube) and Wigan away (which I haven't). This is therefore quite a find.

I've still never found any footage of BWFC in 83/4. ITV covered some games in the 80-83 Division 2 days and obviously before then there's plenty of BBC and ITV coverage. Halfway through 85/6 games started being filmed regularly for the club by Easy Video, Roadrunner's predecessors. It just leaves 83/4 as a black hole.

Thanks for posting.

I was buzzing when I stumbled on it to be honest , was it perhaps 6-0 at half time , oddly they seem to have shown 2 of our disallowed goals but not Fosters legitimate goal. In our history I wonder if we have ever conceded that many goals in such a short space of time? .

I was just about to post the same.  I'm positive it was 6-0 at half time but these days..the replay does look like the ref has disallowed both our 'goals'

Yes having just watched it back I think that's the case.

I doubt it. It was 6 goals in 17 minutes I think. We looked more ragged with each goal conceded.

You get a glimpse of what looks like an incredibly impressive away following in the corner of the side terrace as well. More evidence that we seemed to take our entire home attendance to away games in those days!

I think it was. Dusan has pointed out that Wayne Foster's goal isn't included on the highlights but our disallowed ones are. Odd!

I was at Loughborough Uni 1984 and went with some guys from my Halls of Residence - god it was embarrassing to be 6 - 0 down at half time but they were well impressed with the Bolton support. Don’t remember 4 disallowed goals though.

went to Wolves and Mansfield away about that time

I always found going to a game with non Bolton fan mates was a recipe for a terrible performance and result , mind you I never had it quite so bad as the Notts match.

Mate of mine from school (DMB) came to a few aways, he couldn’t believe some of stories I told him about decent followings and scrapping. Some of the games he did were Port Vale 105th minute winner, Blackpool Sherpa van northern final, Barnsley F.A Cup. Fair to say he got a flavour of it over the years

Three classics right there!

There must have been a good few in those days who only went to away games and avoided Burnden.

A miserable defeat at Notts County in 1988 . I think Njgel Jemson played in this from memory.

Great find mate, thanks for that.

Our coach load from the Albion didn't get in until we were 6-0 down, we arrived late on Forest's car park and it was 0-0 at the time 😄

Ended up in their end where the teams came out before being escorted round the pitch.

Didn't get home until the following afternoon thanks to trouble with Forest fans later, hence the entire coach load kept in overnight, then the bleeding coach broke down on the way home....couldn't script it.

Great day and night 😄
