I could not remember it either but must have been there as had a season ticket in them days and rarely missed a game .... just looked at the fixtures and seen it was played 4 days after we had drawn 1-1 at Everton in the League Cup Semi final first leg - am sure most peoples minds that day were on what had happened at Everton , getting  tickets for the home leg and of course the nailed on trip to Wembley that would surely follow....

Hadn't realised it was in that momentous phase in our history. Gate was 28,525, which probably reflects that sense of optimism loads of people felt. Loads of fans did think we'd got it in the bag after that late equaliser and Goodison.

As a kid at the time I loved Neil Whatmore.  A great finish and athleticism for that 3rd goal.  Did we beat them 4-2 in the promotion year?

Speaking of Whatmore and the Everton semi, I would love to see his goal from the 1st leg.  Was it ever shown on Granada reports or look north west the night after, does anyone know? I'd pay good money to see that and Worthys winner at OT if footage exists somewhere.

The league cup semi had minimal coverage of the home leg on look north, following night

Dont think the first leg was covered

It was 4-2 in the promotion year. I think it was a night match around Autumn time. We did well in derbies that year. The only defeat was at home to Burnley very soon in the New Year - which was an odd one because they were near the bottom until a late surge saw them clear.

Blackpool went down that year with an awful run of results late on. It took them 35 years to get back to tier two. Which served the cunts right if you ask me. We beat them 2-1 at home and 0-2 away (wish the latter was on video, I posted the former on You Tube some years ago, as below). We won 0-1 on the opening day at Burnley, no need to say how we got on at Blackburn. No games v PNE or Bury that year and Wigan weren't even in the league.

I will later be posting another home game v Blackpool from a slightly different era. Look out for that!

Another home win over Blackpool. This time it's the 1989/90 season and a Boxing Day encounter with the sad bastards from Bloomfield Road who love to hate Bolton. They had a couple of 2-1 wins over us at Gloomfield including an FA Cup game that was on Match of the Day. Best forgotten.

This was another season in which they ended up getting relegated. For us it all ended with play off disappointment against Notts County in the year of the Swindon league cup saga.

I might be struggling to do any more of these until next weekend but the  minute I get chance I'll be on the case. We've had some Blackburn and Wigan stuff this weekend, and now Blackpool. So while we are on derby wins I'll see if can dig out some Burnley, PNE and Bury stuff.

I have a memory of the police horses charging the Bolton fans outside Ewood? Don't know if I've made that up in my mind or whether it was a different game. What they were thinking by putting Blackburn v Bolton as the first game of the season I don't know. Talk about asking for trouble. Then the season after - Burnley v Bolton!! We won that one though.

We played Burnley twice away on 1st day in 70s and then in 82 (McGovern's first game) and twice in recent times (1st game after relegation from Prem then following season).  Also played them at home in early 2000s (Burnley's 1st game above bottom 2 divisions for about 20 years).  It makes me think Burnley must be our most-played opening day opponents of last 45 years.  In comparison I'm struggling to think of one other local derby on day one post 1976, (except Man U away early 2000s and that doesn't count, not a derby atmosphere when we go there).

And used to get the same with "oh when the whites go marching in" with people stamping their feet in the wooden Burnden and Manny Road stands. Another song you never hear these days.

When I first went to games I wasnt really a BW fan, just went to any games an adult would take me to.  3 chants struck me as being really, really loud: Whites Go Marching In (sounded like roof was going to come off), "We all agree, Bolton Wanderers are Magic" - sounds a bit naff now but it absolutely reverberated around the ground.  And "Oh Frankie Frankie, Frankie Frankie Frankie Frankie Worth-Ing-Ton".  They really made an impression on me and helped me fall for the place.  The 4th that got a regular airing was "The Whites Are Going Up", sounded fantastic.

I shouldn’t be a Bolton fan my dads City and Salford lad, took me to Maine road but it didn't have any magic to me, first time at Burnden park I somehow sensed the history and magic even though I had no idea of the clubs history, then on the lever end I couldn’t believe the passion and love the fans showed for BWFC and I was completely hooked, and here I am 45 years later still hooked line and sinkered.

Fairly sure the "We all agree - Bolton Wanderers are magic!" chant was as a result of the Frankie Frankie Frankie Frankie Worthington in a roundabout way.

Bill Maynard, actor who starred in comedy as Selwyn Frogget had, as that character, a catchphrase, "Magic our Maurice!" Maynard wasn't particularly a fan of any club but attended games where Worthington was playing. For that reason he was often seen at Bolton games during Worthy's tenure.

Great stuff.  The City crowd in the 70s and 80s always seemed half asleep to me!  Their passion really came out once they'd got relegated to the 3rd tier, and they had Shaun Goater and Dickov etc, I bet any City fans would say that was their best era for atmosphere.  I've stood on Stretford End, Kop, Gladys St, Kippax and countless other home ends growing up in the 70s and 80s and the only one that came close to the Burnden Paddock for passion and love for the club was the Stretford End in late 70s.

The Lever end was better than the paddock,  early to mid 70s  used to come home with ears ringing it was that loud, the low roof and singers all in the centre of the stand meant the noise had no where to go, seating the Lever End was sacrilege.

Maynard (who surprisingly played for Leicester City Juniors in his youth) and is claimed by Leicester City as one of their celebrity fans - followed Worthington when he was transferred from Leicester to Bolton and became a regular at Burnden

Still have the Buff from the day when already promoted we clinched the second division championship against Fulham and there is a small article on the front page  –

Magic Chant    Wanderers fans, many Drinking champagne, burst Into a chorus of “ Bolton Wanderers are Magic “when Actor Bill Maynard, TV’s Selwyn Froggitt, took his Place in the directors’ box. Tumultuous applause greeted the Wanderers appearance on the pitch

The Buff April 29 1978

Happy Days !

Absolutely. Sometimes, just walking down the back of the Lever End pre match to get in the St Peters Rd side turnstiles, you could hear the singing & feel the atmosphere building up, .....plus in big matches with a big away following , there was a definite edge to it all.

In my very earliest days watching Bolton - around 1976,  we were in the Lever End. What my Dad was thinking of taking a 5 year old in there I don't know!

Anyway it all ended on the day of the riot on the pitch against Chelsea. The five year old me got knocked to the ground by a Chelsea fan ... who was then in turn knocked to the ground by my Dad. Copper was about to arrest him but a more senior plod came along having seen what had happened to me - "leave him,, but we've enough on here today without Dad's like you getting involved". We were escorted to the Manny Road stand.

I do remember 83/4 when the green seats of the Lever End suddenly became the place to be for six months or so.

I was one of those in 83/84, don't know who's idea it was but it wasn't there best 😊

I don't recall the Lever End seats ever being the place to be. I never actually sat in them but can't imagine a terracing with 3 or 4 inch high steps ever making a great seated area.

Only good memory was being in there when Caldwell scored 5.

Was there for that game, think all us yoof went in there because it was only place we could create an atmosphere,  crowds were hovering around 4/5k and I’d say 2k were yoof in the lever end. First time I remember seeing Miami white was that era.
