Just had a whizz through the show, enjoyed it - maybe  a tad too much Motown for a Northern Soul stint imo.Loved the Epitome of sound around 1min 44 ( originally covered up as Moses Smith by the Casino DJ's iirc) closely followed by a Frank Butler classic. The 3 before 8 was a nice touch to finish the show.

Good show SJM,good luck with it.

Basically anything on the motown record label would be classed  as Tamla Motown and has that commercial sound that TM were trying (and succeeding) to achieve, although one or 2 did crossover onto the Northern soul scene.

All the rest would be classed as Northern soul - the better ones would be generally more obscure and not usually as "Poppy" as Tamla Motown.

Having said that, some of the stuff being plugged by DJ's as Northern Soul at the time (Mid 70's) was shite.

Apparently around 14,000 songs classed as Northern Soul have been made - but only around 500 - 1000 are any good imo.

Pretty much sums it up. Some obscure Motown tracks were played at the various clubs in the 60's and early seventies. Frank Wilson's 'Do I love you' was a Motown track but was never released commercially. The thing about the various iconic clubs of the time, The Twisted Wheel, Golden Torch, The Highland Room, Wigan Casino and others was that they spanned a few years and tended to play tracks that the others didn't. There was always a core play list though that became classics.

Anyone watch "Living for the Weekend" on BBC4. I noticed it on iplayer, good watch, lot of snobbery around the scene particularly Ian Levine

I watched it & thought Levine & Winstanley came over as the kind of people who can give Northern Soul a bad name with their own self-importance meaning more to them than the actual music. Bolton's Richard Searling spoke much more sensibly.

IMO, last year's Culture Show - Keeping the Faith , was a lot better programme.

Richard Searling is a decent Bowtoner in spite of being a Spurs fan. Russ Winstanley and Ian Levine, although obviously both lovers of the music, were even more in love with self promotion/personal gain imo.

Just so good that it caught the folk like me at the time and hearing good tunes at the Highland Room in the Mecca, then i strayed to Bowie in 72.

Just watched it. Snobbery or elitism? The latter was always a part of it ("our thing" which outsiders knew fuck all about).

Enjoyed the documentary. Like the football terraces of the late 60's to the mid 70's, I'm just grateful I was able to enjoy it all that in my prime. Unmatchable and unmissable times IMO. Pity for those who missed them but at least they can have a tantalising taste.

Watched Soul Boy but didn't think much of it.

Saw Once Upon a Time in Wigan at the Contact Theatre back in 2003 and that gave me goose bumps. Missed out on the last night tickets which included an after show party dj'd by Russ Winstanley.

There was a disagreement at one time and it was said it would never be performed again. Presumably that was resolved.
