Drew Peacock
Venice is fabulous - but take lots of money! Only ever been in April though, not when it is swarming with tourists
Site Supporter Biggish Dave Posted April 14, 2014 Site Supporter Share Posted April 14, 2014 My olds love Malcesnie, I've been to Riva, not a bad place but not sure I'd like to spend 5 days in just 1 place. I'd maybe stay halfway down the lake then you can get on the boats and explore other little towns and maybe even have a day trip in to Verona
gregbwfc
Can second Riva and as mentioned, you can get boats easy enough to travel up and down the lake. Did Venice and Verona as day trips from there, enjoyed both but bloody long days.

Ghana White
Try and get to verona if you can. If you stay in the south of the lake it's easier to get to verona and Venice. There's a train station at pesciarra (wrong spelling probably) good way to get to these places and even Milan. Try and do the walk down the coast, think it's from garda to bardilino (wrong spelling). Ferries great way to get round I didn't see much of the north of the lake though so can't really comment on that. Lake garda is brilliant, well worth a visit

jules_darby
If you're in Venice for more than 2 days head over to the other island where the beach is; can't remember the name...ace It might be expensive to eat looking at the Rialto bridge but we had a lovely lunch there...I'd avoid eating or drinking at St Marks though

Hotel was on the Lido and got a waterbus over each day. On the final morning he suggested taking a shopping trip. Within 15 minutes I had bought a bag for my wife and a toy for my nephew, but it took him 4 hours to pick for his wife, son and daughter, ending up at the self-same shop where I had bought a bag much earlier. We then adjourned to Harry's Bar. I went for a piss, he went to get drinks. When I got back he said we should get out, as he'd seen the prices! Lake garda is brilliant, well worth a visit North of the lake can be breezy, they do a lot of windsurfing etc up there garda itself and that side of the lake is best IMO If the op is there 5 days I think incorporating Venice too is a bit of a push, Venice isn't really a day trip from lake Garda iirc. Verona is though
jayjayoghani
Verona is worth a visit IMO. If you do go, visit a restaurant called La Vecia Mescola, absolutely fantastic.
Widnes Two Hats
Venice stinks of shit, the prices are just plain stupid, and the place is full of bottom pinchers Save your money and go somewhere worth seeing

exiledwhite2
I like the look of Sirmione, south of lake Garda , any WW experience of it? Yeah it's really nice. Very much a tourist magnet, dead busy at peak times. Not been there at night so can't comment on that. It's on the end of a long peninsula / strip of land that jags out into the lake - about 1 km long - so most of the accommodation that calls itself Sirmione is along this strip (a road basically, not the Las Vegas strip!). I'd just be wary that you're not too far away from Sirmione itself - everything is at the end of the peninsula - because a regular 1km walk into the centre in hot Italian weather could be a drag... I'd go to Garda or Bardolino personally and visit Sirmione on the boat a couple of times Edited April 15, 2014 by exiledwhite2

exiledwhite2
latest suggestion is 5 days split between Lake Garda and Verona? I've been to Verona on a day trip while saying in Garda, only an hours drive iirc, easy to park up in the centre of town too. Only a small place. I think a train runs from lake Garda (desenzano or peschiara) to there if you aren't driving. Personally, i Would do the day trip rather than actually stay in Verona, simply because the lake and the views etc are great, I'd rather be waking up and having a stroll around there than in Verona Again though I've not been there at night so can't comment on that side of it There is some huge event in Verona each year in the coliseum, opera i think, suppose if you went to that you'd want to stay the night there

kaydan
Did 2 weeks on lake garda with the wife and kids last summer. We stayed near peschiera - did day trip to Verona, cheap on train. About €15 for the four of us on a non express train which was about 25 mins rather than 20 I think. Wife and daughter did an organised day trip to Venice. About €100 I think coach and water taxi. They loved it. All the towns around are beautiful - I'd stay in Bardalino or Lazise if I had a choice, but the towns in the north part are lovely, Riva, Limone and Malchesne. Do the cable car from Malchesne. Gardaland is ace if you have kids. Oh and hire a boat for a few hours. Loved it and wasn't that expensive from Peschiera.
