Is he the only British rider still competing?

No. Geraint Thomas is still in as key support to Porte (and 15th in his own right).

Yates dropped to third when the group split, but was caught by the peloton on the final climb. One of the group stayed clear to win the stage.

Nearly finished now, won by default by Nibali.

More excitingly, Adam Yates (twin brother of Simon who got a ride in the Tour, both from Bury) has just returned from his Summer break today and won the race on his first day back. Even if he does nothing else all year this has already been one of the best debut seasons by a rider and the way he's started the 2nd half he could have plenty more left..Earlier in the season he was competing on even terms with several riders doing very well in the Tour (including beating Nibali at the last big warm up race before the Tour).

Why has he won by default?

Surely if folk drop out due to injury that's all part of it isn't it

After those 2 crashed out it has been a parade because there were only 3 top level riders taking part - the rest of the top 10 is exceptionally weak by historical standards (even more so than when Wiggo won).

He won perfectly legitimately, but personally prestige comes from the quality of the achievement, not just the name of the race.

It's a very long shot for those 2 to both crash out. Nibali has now won all 3 GTs which means he has the palmares of an all time great. He's a very good rider, but he's not an all time great.
