Thorpey
So White, Riley and Wilkinson off on loan and the U21s fielding a full squad except Zach Clough tonight with little chance that they'll be involved at Chelsea where can we expect youngsters to break through? I know Chelsea away is not the best place if you're expecting to compete and get a result but we're not, especially with some of the under-performing over-paid lot in the firsts. I just can't see blooding youngsters happening and can't understand why the decent prospects aren't given a decent run in the firsts. They'll try their bollocks off for a regular first team place and I'd much rather see a David Reeves 110% trier than some of that lot currently plying their trade in the firsts. Saw the U21s tonight and when you see the effort some of that lot put in I just don't get it. Rob Hall ran out of steam last ten but before that was a different class, listened to what he was told and put in a great shift against some bigger lads and got stuck in. He must of upset DF not to get a sniff at the mo. Tom Youngs reminds me a bit of Andy Walker outside the box with his closing down and was unlucky not to poach a couple, but is a small one but a good little one. Josh Vela looks like he's built up a bit and puts himself around a bit in the middle. Oscar Threlkeld looked very solid at the back and reads the game well. Best of the lot, George Iliev. I have never seen effort like it for a long while. Terrorised the Reading back line all night, won headers against bigger lads, pace and vision. Highlight of the night was Reading lad Rob Dickie being told to block him off from getting a run from a goal kick. Dickie grabbed his shirt but Iliev was soon clear to win the header with a rib tickler with Dickie moaning to the ref that Iliev 'is a fucking psycho'! Give this lad a chance for god sake. Lastly, Jamie Fullarton is a gob shite! Barking contradictory orders from the bench you just knew players were either not listening or giving him the thumbs up and thinking 'cock shut up'. He'll be gone with DF. Edited September 22, 2014 by Thorpey
Mounts Kipper
Good read update Thorpey, echo your comments on Fullarton went to pre season BWFC academy v Hyde, know the lad who plays for Hyde and who scored that day his comments on Fullarton almost identical to yours, think Gumbo rates him though and he's coached at the club. Site Supporter Biggish Dave Posted September 23, 2014 Site Supporter Share Posted September 23, 2014 Wolves swept out most of their 1st team after relegation and came back with kids with 1 or 2 old heads - that's the time we would blood our youngsters too if we sink. FWIW, I would like to see 1 or 2 in now - we must have some capable given the way the 1st team are playing or they shouldn't be at the club

Traf
I was a little alarmed, when DF mentioned Wolves having to go down again to "clear the decks". Hasn't DF already cleared the decks?
BOWTUN BAKED
It's a sad indictment of recent regimes that after all the soundbites of giving youth a chance, after all the investment put into the academy set up & the purchases of 'ones for the future', there is yet to be any of these young lads break through enough to stake a regular claim in the first team squad. The question is why? FWIW, there's probably a number of reasons, you can take your pick. Either they're not good enough, which would beg the question, why all the investment if the execution is obviously lacking. Maybe we've been unlucky with injuries to these young lads, Kellett, Vela, Riley, they've all had their time out through injury. Expectations, maybe some of these 'ones for the future' are expecting to be going straight into the first squad, not bounced around between Under 21's & cup games/bench warming. Bastos, Bolger, Robinson, have come & gone within the blink of an eye. Hall, well I think we've already covered that one. Pressure, whilst a manager is struggling to get results, maybe it's easier to go to the loan market, to try to get experience in to pull results around. It'd take a very brave manager to take the risk on youth, when ultimately it could cost you your job in the long run. Which in turn leaves the baffling decision to bring in other clubs young players like Herd & Mason, maybe suggesting ours aren't considered good enough. I don't know, I'm just thinking out aloud, but, like others I'm hoping some do make it. Those out on loan at the moment, Wilkinson, White, Riley, I hope it's to get themselves experience, rather than book balancing to bring in another loan from elsewhere. I do worry that they might not make it through circumstances rather than talent though. Time will tell. Good luck to them.

Only thing I'd add is that the loan market (& other 'first-team' signings) aren't working results-wise or football-wise. So something more fundamental must be wrong. Moderators Casino Posted September 23, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 23, 2014 bowtun and i had a similar discussion on saturday i did ask hiim why riley and white were at oxford and carlisle my view is that its not cos either of em are the next cafu
Moderators Carlos Posted September 23, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 23, 2014 Riley needs to play football, rather than being chucked in at this level and getting injured again IMO.

My concern would be are they good enough, if Rob Hall is 'different class' not sure the others can be that good. Given the current mood within the supporters how long before a kid gets slaughtered for a bad game ? Garvan ain't young but has been tarnished already and has not played a full 90', he stood up and took a penalty ok he missed but to read some comments on here he is now a shit waste of space. Ream at right back is a liability so the management can not think much of Riley, White or Oscar if he is still playing. If the young uns can come in and play with no fear it could be just what we need, I honestly do not think players are cypher rentals not putting effort in but we lack a spark and maybe they could provide it. davidjack
Casino, how about Riley playing some football for the club he's contracted to play for? Especially when that club is making do with a not very good left back at right back instead (tho why McNaughton didn't play on Sat when DF declared him fit, only he knows). Just a thought. And he'd hardly be 'being chucked in at this level' would he - given he looked more than capable at Premier League level, from the few glimpses we had of him. And that was 3 years ago, so he's hardly a kid anymore.
passmosster
Saw the youth team at Spurs season before last. They were brilliant. If any of them don't make the grade, I would have to ask what the hell's going on?

davidjack
Well if he was worth giving a contract to and he's fit and we have no other fit right backs worth the name, it just seems a little odd to have him plying his trade at Oxford, is all. Moderators Casino Posted September 23, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 23, 2014 and if we'd released him at 18? why can't you see that theres every chance his level is oxford every chance jay lynch has found his level at salford etc etc etc
davidjack
That may well be the case, but without giving him a run in our side we won't ever be able to make that assessment, will we?
Moderators Casino Posted September 23, 2014 Moderators Share Posted September 23, 2014 i believe we have made the assessment maybe others have too, hence his landing up at oxford rather than city, stoke or wigan either that or we're getting him fit who knows apart from you
tylswhite
People don't always develop at the same rate/age. He has shown in the past he can play to a decent level. If he plays regular and builds up strength and confidence theres every chance he can get back to that level. Unlikely we are going to be getting any ready made quality players any time soon is it? davidjack
I just said I don't know either. What I don't understand is constantly loaning players out who've shown promise (Wilkinson, Riley, Vela) to make way for journeymen - at best - loans and cast-offs. If said loans and cast-offs had amassed more than 5 points from 8 games I might see the logic...but they haven't, and I don't.

I've read some of those comments. About four or five years ago I went to watch our reserves play Man City at Hyde. I knew the then Chairman, so I was hoping to Hob Nob with Coyle & Bobby Mac. As it was Coyle wasn't in attendance but met Mancini, nice bloke, but I digress. Two lads stood out, one for City in their midfield, his name escapes me but if I could remember it, I'm guessing he's not there anymore. The other was playing for Bolton. He was superb going forward, good at picking out a pass, great at overlapping & with a good accurate cross. However, his defensive positioning was questionable, caught out by their winger on a number of occassions, especially towards the end of the match. Seems the same comments are still being made 4 or 5 years later, Joe Riley.
