Members bolty58
Well at least The Offer made the field even if La Amistad didn't (note - runs in a 2400m race in Sydney on Saturday and is a great chance at around 5.00). Already on The Offer but the form references are the two mares Dear Demi and Lucia Valentina and the nibblers in the woodpile (PC see ) are the two Japanese stayers Bande and Admire Rakti. Reports are that Bande is working the place down and is a very live threat. Hope The Offer delivers (even though its target is the Melbourne Cup) but finding it very hard to ignore the recent runs of Dear Demi and Lucia Valentina. At the odds, Dear Demi looks the value runner in the race.
Members bolty58
Dear Demi was scratched. Bande (top rated Jap) was sensationally scratched with an elevated temperature. Lucia Valentina ran a great race and was a fast finishing third. The other Jap (Admire Rakti - top weight) stormed home to beat them when Rising Romance (eventually second) booted clear at the top of the straight and looked home for all money. RR's jockey (James McDonald) was genuinely stunned in a post race interview. RR was going so well and so fast, he could not believe anything could pass him whilst going that strongly at the end if a mile and a half race, This tells you how good the Japanese stayer was. He has only been penalised half a kilo for the Melbourne Cup and looks a very live chance. A word of caution though - this would be a modern day weight carrying record to win this race with this weight. Not been done since 1975 when Think Big won it for Bart Cummings. The manner in which he won suggests that he could do it and, of course, if Bande is supposed to be the better of the two Jap stayers, what might that mean!? Will the inflamed ligament have set him back too far in his training regime? One thing I do know. I was at Flemington for the Melbourne Cup the only other time the Japs have had runners in it. Delta Blues and Pop Rock in 2006. They ran 1st and 2nd in that order and streeted the field. The Japanese are very, very good trainers of stayers.
