When Manchester Was Shite In The 70S.

Only started going very late 80s early 90s, tail end of the 'Madchester' era...

Would all pile off the 36 or 25 in the Arndale bus stop and go for a piss in that orange decor cafe that time forgot - one of us having to buy a can of Vimto as the bog was 'customers only'. Who'd have supped in that JW Lees pub attached to the bus station? It looked grim as fuck.

We used to regularly get mugged at (stanley)knifepoint broad daylight on Market Street, soon learned to keep a pocketful of two pees, one pees and the odd five pee to palm off on the muggers - fucking shithouses as we we're all pre-teens then...

The only place you could afford to get sommat to eat was the Ice Cream van up near Piccadilly Gardens that did hotdogs, a cone of chips from 'Skippers' chippy near the Arndale Market entrance - or, failing that, a bag of Mexican Spice 'Wheelz' from one of the many Aleef newsagents. The money spent on food was done begrudgingly, every other penny went on records...

That arcade down Oxford Road used to be moody as fuck an' all, it used to be a proper shithole did Manchester, the last remant of shitness in the centre was the 'Magazine Exchange' near Shudehill...Everywhere was once as seedy as that shop.

I just remember going to The Cave when I was a Modette.  I was only a nipper really and Manchester was a big City, so I used to get off the train, walk there, then go back.  I would probably have got lost had I ventured further.

Edit:  This was the mid 80's by the way, I'm not THAT old.

Don't forget Cloud 9 next door.

Thought it was a better, more interesting city centre in the 80s/early 90s before the bomb, and before retail became ultra professional

It was unique, as were many towns and cities I guess.

Used to get some cool clothes in the bargain bins of the big stores when I got a bit older. All sorts of stuff just shoved in big containers, not recycled off to TK Maxx or their ebay shop as they would now.

You could buy banned videos in brown carrier bags, shoplift jacketfuls of computer games left right and centre (younger days), go mooching about Johnny Roadhouse and A1 music, and all for 20p return fare.

Frequented a record shop in Tib St for bootleg LPs (that's 12in vinyl for you youngsters.

Also where I bought my first northern soul patch although it would be another 4 yrs before I realised what it was. I'd bought it 'cos I had a hole in my jeans.

Yanks records near Tommy Ducks.

Underground market

Couple of my mates used to rob Yanks which such ease almost every weekend. Had a great metal selection.

And vaguely remember another mate buying some rare Stranglers imports from a record shop in the underground (Don't Bring Harry, I think!).

Buying gig tickets from downstairs at Piccadilly Records.

You couldn't get them online in the 80s/90s. Had to turn up and buy them from there or the actual venue.

Pain in the arse!

Manc was ace in the 70's! was at the poly from 76 - 83. oxford rd was full of free topless lunch time dance bars were a young lad cud have two pints and some lunch with a couple of quid change from a fiver! if thats not civilised then WTF!

Then after 5pm a lad cud pay a couple of quid entrance into any of the big clubs on that stretch to get a glimpse of the whole hog!

After there was the original greek kebab bar next to the old cinema at the bottom of oxford rd!  Proper character in those days with not a fuckin cocktail bar in sight!
