I'd ban dogs tommorrow. Filthy fuckers.

You can argue that line with absolutely anything. I might well be able to take heroin responsibly. Why ban it?

Lewis Hamilton could probably drive round the streets at 60 mph. Why have a 30 limit?

Laws are in place because there are fucking idiots who can't do shit reponsibly. We have to cater for the lowest lowest common denominator.

Anyway - America is a lost cause as far as guns are concerned. They've made their 2nd amendment bed they can lie in it.

Now what about us? Status quo? Or would you liberalise it over here? So we can all start protecting ourselves?

Why indeed?

Because he is no more capable than you or I of slamming on to avoid schoolkids running out, for instance.

Bollocks. If that were true then every item which has ever been misued in human history would have to be licensed or signed out of some government store whenever someone normal wants to use them. The town fuckwit is just as capable as anyone else of buying a large meat cleaver at his leisure. So no, law is not there to cater for the lowest common denominator at all.

The individual is sovereign over himself and no-one has the right or authority  to tell him what to do in matters that concern only himself, to paraphrase JS Mill.  If that includes an arsenal of weapons collected for his own personal merriment, so be it.  Wouldn't be my bag, but there again neither would be wearing rollneck jumpers, joining the communist party or roller blading. No reason to ban them though is it.

The violent crime rate is not so high in Britain that we require guns to protect ourselves, much as I think people have the right to if they wish. But I might change my mind if I lived in a high crime estate and not a village in Devon.

"The Americans launched their war against drugs in 1924 after senators took evidence from specialists on heroin who told them that the drug was toxic, unusually deadly and that, as one witness put it 'there is no greater peril than heroin'. This was untrue but, once injected into the public domain, the falsehood was picked up and spread further, just as with the millenium bug, by others who had some interest in it: racists who used it to attack Chinese immigrants, law-enforcement agencies who used it to increase their funding and their powers, and then by genuine know-nothings who thought they were being helpful. The media knew no better and again operated as an echo chamber, spreading the untruth, stimulating activity which took the untruth for granted, and then reporting that activity as though it was well founded. Delusion and reality became locked together."

Only those in specific circles can purchase a gun in this country.

Some weirdo in his bedroom simply can't go online a buy a gun in this country.

That's why we don't have mass shootings. If you could, we would.

I knew a lad with connections in Manchester that had a gun. He died in an unrelated incident. The police operation to track that gun was absolutely ridiculous. They had everyone that ever knew the lad in for questioning to find the whereabouts of the firearm, including his parents, work colleagues and extended family.

A 6 week+ operation over one gun. They eventually tracked it to a storage unit in Preston.

It's fairly easy to buy a shotgun here, providing you pass Police background checks, aren't classed as a nutter by your doctor and have a reasonable need for one (clay pigeon shooting/pest control) you should get your license and the jobs a goer.

There's no limit on the amount of cartridges you can possess (I remember someone saying the Police get twitchy at 10000 but it's more to do with explosives laws). We're limited to what we can buy firearms wise and getting your license is a bit more involved but it's fairly similar to a shotgun license, albeit with what you can shoot and where with much tighter control over ammo levels.

Not sure of the exact background to the story of your friend and the missing gun, but if it wasn't in his cabinet, at a registered firearms dealer, with the Police or lent to another cert holder he was on thin ice.

I will give good odds that never in the history of humanity have the words 'heavily-built, shaven-headed or faint whiff of cannabis' been used to report on a funeral.

Classic reporting from the Bolton News
