He'd been around for a while, poking the mainstream parties. In the end it worked and he got his referendum.

The money flew in then, but he was more than just a front man.

Almost the definition of a front man.

If you can be arsed go look up who funds him.

Seems a bit daft having to self isolate for 2 weeks just to make such a lukewarm speech

I reckon he might if he thought it would get him a second term. I also reckon he'd have him impaled on a spike on the White House lawn if that would work too! 😁

if enough of his nutters get out in the key states this fucker can win again. He will win Flori-dur coz of all the retirees with money and the Cuban Exile votes (just has to appear tough on Castro to get them). Then he can say i support coal and fracking to win in Pennsylvania again. One thing against him is he is not up against Hilary this time so sleepy Joe should just about win.  After months of recounts and court cases

Said I wouldn't revisit this thread until the election was over but this has to be posted. Not read one word above this post so will go back to leaving it alone until Biden is president.

Recommended reading is Donald Rumsfeld’s biography of Gerald Ford, titled ”When the Center Held.” It was written in 2018. The book clearly articulates that President Ford was a thoroughly good man, a special American, and a greatly underrated President.

HOWEVER, there was a story in the book that was startling.

In 1975, President Ford was left to manage the difficult ending of the Vietnam War. As North Vietnam seized on the opportunity to test American resolve following President Nixon’s resignation, President Ford went to Congress to ask for a relief package to push back on the North Vietnamese to allow American personnel and our allies to evacuate. However, there was one US Senator who opposed any such support. The result was the embarrassing and hurried evacuation from the roof of the American embassy in Saigon.

This senator reviled in the embarrassment and did everything he could to leverage it politically against Ford.

Despite the efforts of this U.S .Senator--President Ford managed to rescue 1,500 South Vietnamese allies prior to the country’s fall. Had President Ford not acted quickly, these people would have been targeted and slaughtered for their support for America. Saving them was a moral obligation.

When they arrived in America, President Ford asked Congress for a package to assist these refugees integrate into American society. But that troublesome US Senator showed up again and torpedoed any support for these shell shocked refugees. Instead, President Ford had to recruit Christian organizations to offer assistance on a voluntary basis. As he did so, the aforementioned Senator belittled those efforts.

What kind of person would oppose President Ford’s tireless work to do the right and humanitarian thing? Who would want to play politics with the well-being of innocent people who stood by America in the tragic Vietnam War?

That US Senator? Joe Biden.

Donald Trump isn't a saint and we all have issues with him. But the gushing and revisionist history over Joe Biden and his record is nauseating.

Donald Trump isn't a saint and we all have issues with him. But the gushing and revisionist history over Joe Biden and his record is nauseating.

Without doing any initial research I think what you’re referring to is the Vietnam refugee act. If you are this was voted against by two thirds of congress, including sen. Joe Biden.

So yeah that is true, however this was the end of the war and Ford was in charge of the hard task of withdrawing troops.

The south Vietnamese were allies to the US so, they could either flee as refugees or stay and be imprisoned or executed as enemies of the state.

Now the act Ford put in place stipulated that in the event of rescuing or helping the refugees US soldiers they could use military force or being able to use US soldiers with withdraw them.
Neither of these could be used because it risked starting the war up again.

So it was voted against.

Now a bit of in-depth research

A refugee act was passed, and rejected by two senators, Republican senators Jesse Helm (North Carolina) and William Scott (Virginia) whilst 20 votes abstained.

Then a fund bill was passed to assist refugees of Vietnam and Cambodia. No money spent on military aid because the city of Saigon had already fallen.

Then I found this out about a meeting at the White House.

“During the meeting, Senator Biden made only three brief statements. He complained that the State Department had not shown the evacuation plan. Biden wanted to separate the three issues mentioned earlier: (1) Evacuation of Americans; (2) Evacuation of Vietnamese; and (3) military aid. He wanted to focus immediately on the evacuation of Americans because it was easy and well prepared. Like most members of the U.S. Congress, Mr. Biden did not support military aid for Vietnam.

Mr. Biden said in his own words as follows: “We should focus on getting them out. Getting the Vietnamese out and military aid for the Government of Vietnam (GVN) are totally different.” A few minutes later he continued, "I don't want to have to vote to buy it all or not at all. I will vote for any amount for getting the Americans out. I don't want it mixed with getting the Vietnamese out.”

However, Jerry Dunleavy of The Washington Examiner newspaper twisted Mr. Biden's words by saying, “Biden said U.S. allies should not be rescued.” At the meeting, no one said anything like that.

Also at a meeting at the White House, President Ford was furious with Senator Claiborne Pell when he suggested settling Vietnamese people on Indonesia's Borneo Island. However, lacking a professional conscience, Dunleavy replaced Mr. Pell's statement with a previous statement from Mr. Biden that had nothing to do with the Vietnamese refugees' settlements:

“I will vote for any amount for getting the Americans out. I don't want it mixed with getting the Vietnamese out.”

Dunleavy deliberately wanted readers to misunderstand that Biden did not want to evacuate Vietnamese to the U.S. like other refugees in the past, and thus President Ford got upset at Mr. Biden and not Mr. Pell.”

Joe Biden didn’t vote against rescuing Vietnam refugees, he was in agreement that the soldiers shouldn’t be used and Fords initial bill was flawed.
