I'm much more a lurker than a poster on WWs, reading everyone's input and opinions with genuine interest and open mindedness. With that in mind I must say that I've come to the considered conclusion t

Have a plus one

I’m loving the hoo hah over Donald coming to the UK he should come 4-5 times a year just to wind up the nob head lefties. Good work Donald. ????

For example; Public sector employment rose by 21% between 1997 and 2009, This "buying jobs" really came home to roost in the financial crisis, for which Brown left us particularly ill-prepared, especially as he was taking huge tax from the banks.

Which is one of the reasons Gordon Brown isn't a Socialist like you were making out a few posts back. He might purport to be one when he's not serving - but he certainly wasn't in office. He was a free market capitalist - just like (as has been pointed out before) every other western political leader since the 1980's onwards.

That's how I view it anyway.

Eh?

Spend, spend, spending other people's money almost defines (failed) socialism!

Anyway, COTW

You're reducing a complex arguments to soundbites again - this time - one of Maggies - who I've already explained was spending more in terms of GDP during her time in office than Gordon Brown was.

Anyway COYW.

I didn't realise I was talking in soundbites.

I don't think I mentioned Maggie, so you are, I suspect, being selective.

Spending was around 35% of GDP when Labour came to power it then rose steadily to around 42%, then to 47% during the crisis.

The 'spending other people's money' is a cliche - based on a Maggie soundbite.

Some info on relative spend compared to GDP here. So unless you're claiming Thatcher was a Socialist, which is why she was 'throwing money around' at the beginning of her premiership at Brownesque rates - then your argument falls down.

To be fair it is difficult to compare one or even two terms by any party depending on the economic and political situation they find themselves in.

Brown hid billions on PFI which is another good idea gone to rat shit. He as chancellor then PM oversaw record tax receipts yet still never reduced the deficit.

Hindsight and all that means you have to cut some slack especially as the Tories were offering similar spending in the hope of getting elected.

What he did was create an underclass with an expectation of entitlement that we have never experienced before. I know, I have family that have grown up expecting it and they make my blood boil.

Knowing JayJay I would suggest not. Also knowing how fucked the country was in 1979 I would suggest not.

So Gordon Brown somehow managed to fuck the entire global economy single handedly?

You can't expect some of this lot to remember the winter of discontent. Far too young.

For those who experienced it, no fucking union, socialist or anything associated with the left can be palatable (unless you were already a dole bludging scrounger in which case you probably wouldn't have noticed a difference).

Rat infested streets thanks to refuse being piled 10 feet high on the pavements, power blackouts throughout the festive season and all sorts of other dastardly deeds carried out by those seeking to install a government aligned with the now defunct Soviet bloc.

On the plus side, it resulted in the election of one of our greatest PM's. RIP Margaret. Oh for one like you leading the Brexit 'negotiations'. Barnier and his cohorts would be pissing their pants in fear.

Do you reckon MT would have been a Brexiter or a Remainer?

I would say his "educated" decision (as Chancellor) to sell off half of the country's entire gold reserve whilst gold was at a very low price wasn't his best move.

As someone who promised a move away from boom and bust economics he certainly did a good job of setting the country down that very path.

Despite the fact the decision was made by the nations accountants and only signed off by captain charisma following him listening to the 'experts'.

and had the arse not fallen out of the global economy so spectacularly his decision would've been a good one.

Can you explain why?
