That London

Best cheap lunchtime offer is Cote in covent garden for a family, I've found if I'm around there. Pre 7pm I think.

Or, there are some great street food type places in China Town that are really good value for food on the go.

Canary Wharf? Personally, I'd get the DLR to Greenwich from Gunwarf Quay - not far at all and decent places. Just hop on any heading to Lewisham.

Canary Wharf is a bit like a retail park only everyone around you is a guffawing, chinless popinjay and you'll want to start windmilling through the smug twats within about 10 seconds of tucking into your £20 tuna wrap. (It'll have another name like "Line caught bluefin tuna, hand-picked Balinese lettuce and tropical salad in a hand-made unlevened wrap. But trust me, it's canned tuna, lettuce and tomatos from Aldi in a Warbies flatbread).

Do what the thespian says and go to Greenwich. Plus, if it's quiet, your kids can sit at the front of the DLR and pretend they're driving. I've never done it, i'm just saying that you can if you want to, like.

Covent garden - there's a burger place just off the main square that is fantastic. Painfully trendy in a shabby way, but good.

Edit: All that said, London is fucking ace.

Wife and daughter do that there London once or twice a year for the shows, always stay in Covent Garden.

They always take in this Greek place, not sure if your kids would enjoy it if they are young though. Part of a London chain but they swear by this particular one.

The Real Greek, 60-62 Long Acre, London WC2E 9JE 4 mins walk from Covent Garden.

Gaucho at Canary Wharf and Cafe Murano at Covent Garden.

Neither are cheap though.

Gaucho, you must have loadsaa money!

Cote is ace, and they always have a reasonably priced set menu.

There is a Big Easy in both locations, it's a crab/lobster/steak/ribs shack. They have live music on most nights  http://bigeasy.co.uk/#home always a good feed and decent evening out

Cafe Murano? Is that Angela Harnett's place? Aye, I wouldn't expect that to be a cheap feed.

Sorry - shouldn't have forgotten this place for Covent Garden: http://www.batterseapiestation.co.uk/#!home/c1ow2

Murano is where Hartnett chefs, the two Cafe Muranos are slightly more casual.

Never been to Cote, I'm a bit wary of steak as I never liked it until I went to Buenos Aires so I only eat it in Gaucho or Cau as it's Argentinian beef there. Tried steak in Hawksmoor & didn't like it.

There are lots of the usual suspects at the Wharf but I suggested Gaucho (tongue in cheek tbh) as it's on the river & quite pleasant for pre-dinner cocktails if not for dinner for a family.

Ah, might be able to afford it as a once a month treat then. will have a look, thanks.

I usually have the mussels in Cote - but the minute steak is as nice as I've had in France and I'm not a massive fan of steak, and for the price of the set menu - two courses for 12 quid, can't fault it in that part of town.

Anyway hope you enjoy Hazzy! Loads of stuff on at the moment, with lots of stuff free for families, its a great place to be during summer.

We've been to the St James one which is handy for the West End (they do a theatre menu), went there before East is East at Trafalgar Studios. If you don't have the theatre menu but tell them you're going to the theatre, they make sure you're out in time (well they did with us).

Street food around Camden Locks is always something a bit different. Means everyone can eat separate food.

Don't forget to use your train tickets at the Tower of London - 2 for 1.

Buckingham Palace is a decent tour, worth doing.

Enjoy the London Eye - done it 3-4 times. Not that impressed with Shard for the cost.

Also heading to London with the missus on Tuesday. Staying in super hipster Shoreditch. Some nice places around there, if you can stand the beards and skinny jeans. I agree about the food at Camden market. Incredible. Not a sit down meal type thing though.

I work in Shoreditch in the Rich Mix building.  It's true the idiots have won, but some of the food places are ace - even Box Park is quite good if expensive.

Make sure you get a rainbow bagel down Brick Lane.

I,on the other hand ,will be up North camping in drizzle.

The thing I found about London Frank, is that at first I hated it, then grew used to it and now I absolutely love it... Yes the rent is sky high, and paying nearly 2k to travel 10 miles into work is a ballache, but there is so much stuff to do. There is never a time when we can't do something with the kids, go to a free exhibition, a national museum or like last week, just went down to the southbank after work and had a coffee then a wander over parliament square on the way home, saw a show at the national for 15 quid, been to the proms this summer for 7.50, trips out to the local Lido, even had a 'Day on TfL' with the kids - Tube, Boat and the Airline - all for £15. It can be a really cheap city.

There's lots to do in other cities - London isn't the be all and end all by any means, it's just the range of things here, the sheer size of it means there is just something going whatever your taste, all the time.

On Saturday me and the other half went to see a show she'd been working on in the west end, had to cut through Piccadilly Circus and I understand why tourists hate the city if that's what people see. Horrible, crowded, over-priced.

We'll have to leave as we won't be able to afford living here soon, which is a real shame when normal wages can't even get you a place in zone 4.
