Probably not the same place but what was the snooker place on Manchester Road called?

I think the snooker place / club on Manchester Rd was" Taskers" , & Spencers was in town centre (Mealhouse Lane ?? ) & later became The Crown & Cushion with live bands on.

Spencers was on the corner to where Orlando Bridge starts if you're coming from Farnworth. Think it's a B&M Bargains now.

Edit:

Taskers is still a snooker club on Manny Rd. The nightclub has been shut for years though.....

Snooker club on manny road has gone. Taskers is a carpet place I think. Snooker club is down off raikes lane now in an industrial unit. If it’s open at all now that is

No, i can't remember a "George " round there......it was the George just up from the Griffin & The Railway on Gt Moor St & now converted to student flats or something.

The 2 pubs off St Georges Rd were on Bath St next one from Palace St, The Clarence & McGinlays.

Yes definitely The Clarence  on Palace St, it usually had its fair share of "characters".  Mc Ginlays was at the top of the street and was previously called Benjamin Topps, but i think it had possibly been a pub sometime before BT's, but can't recall the name.

Pink Panther (Palace St) was formerly Tom Ashton car sales. Next door going up was a church which became The Cloisters restaurant in the Holiday Inn hotel. Opposite side of the road at the lower part was the back end of St George’s Church yard.

John Spencer lived on Grindsbrook Road. I'm fairly sure he made the first televised 147 but it wasn't in a tournament, it was a televised practice filling time during a world championship on Grandstand. His brother Bob was landlord of the Turf Hotel on Bolton Rd.  Went to school with one of his lads and the other was a year or so older - I think they helped with the snooker club for a time, and I think one of them still has a club just off the A6 in either Walkden or Swinton

Pretty sure it wasnt the world champs

It was a tournament norwich way, which was being televised by itv, anglia?

However, they were off air for a break when he did it

Im pretty sure he moved from grindsbrook, to even closer to the arrows

According to wiki

John Spencer was an English professional snooker player who won the World Professional title at his first attempt, was the first winner at the Crucible Theatre, was the inaugural winner of the Masters and Irish Masters, and was the first player to make a 147 break in competition.

But then says the tv crew were taking a break and it was unofficial because of the tables they used in that tournament, the Holsten Lager international, were untemplated

Still, not a bad cv

Wasn't there one above La Rachelle/Headhunters an' all...

Glynwebb was in Spencer's for about twenty odd years so that's been shut ages, briefly B&M like someone wrote until Do It All went tits up and they moved there.

Storage place now.

That's money for old rope, the on off bird has a unit in one (handful but fit perfectly) - could probably rent a shit flat for another score.

I liked Farnworth Snooker Club on Longcauseway and the Crown and Flick as I'm shit at snooker.

Never went in Riley's - didn't (another?) Riley used to make cues, chalk and all that?

Taskers was always a grab-a-granny nightclub to us.

Monteraze had a slightly later last orders than most pubs for some reason, so if we were having a good drink in The Brooklyn and/or Southfields and wanted to carry on we'd often taxi down to Monteraze.

Becks on draft there (when it was about 5.6%) often led to the foolhardy group decision to 'carry on' again at chucking out time - over the road at Taskers.

Just had a read through his Wiki page. It’s like a who’s who of snooker players you vaguely recall from your childhood watching Pot Black.

Ray Reardon,

Eddie Charlton

Fred Davies

Joe Davies

Pat Hoolihan

Perry Man’s

John Pullman

Jackie Rea

It also mentions Marcus Owen and Gary Owen but I don’t remember either of them.
