Just finished it actually. Your point is caller?

My point is, the article doesn't say what you thought it did. And you've just confirmed that you posted it before you'd even read it.

Yes, I am the police.

You clearly haven't understood what the article says. Never mind.

I always thought that all our borders have to be same to the same rules under WTO.

So we wouldn't need a hard border in Ireland if the same rules were applied at Dover etc.

It have we received clarification that this isn't the case?

I think Cheese, to be fair, is suggesting that 164 countries are entitled to make a complaint under WTO rules which may force a border to go up.

lets pick a country entirely at random. Erm, Argentina.

Now, they don’t have any axe to grind with us that I know of, but it would only take them to moan and the can of worms is all over the shop.

Even with a hard border you’d still get folk smuggling goods across the border. I’m not sure what benefit there would be if there is a tariff free trade deal.

I'm asking what happens if no deal as some folk on here seem to think it would be fantastic

As cheese rightly points out, that article suggests that in practice, us going WTO would likely lead to a complaint leading to border controls

Border controls doesn’t equal hard border though does it? And that article doesn’t clearly state anything other than the wto won’t insist on hard borders

and says could be complaints not likely. All depends on what trade agreements we have with other countries. Far too many ifs and buts for anyone even the experts to state what is going to happen.

We will have a border. By definition the two countries will have a border. It’s the controls on that border and the checks that are enforced that would lead potentially in certain situations to a hard border.

I don’t envisage is requiring a hard border as I believe the customs checks that will be undertaken will be sufficient. I may be wrong

but as mounts points out correctly. Hard border or not there will be smuggling. It’s a fact it’s going to happen. It happens now into the EU and it will never cease

What does a hard border mean, in your world

Maybe we have different definitions

For me, anything that stops free movement is a hard border

Whatever the definition of hard border is your definition is what matters because checks on people and/or goods at or near the border are contrary to the GFA.

Its mind numbing how this has been discussed for three years yet some cannot accept a plain and simple fact.
