Greatest Game Ever

Clearly not in the "greatest game ever" category... but similarities to Sunday. Bolton 3 Sheff Weds 1 in the final game of Div 2 in 81/2. We had to win to stay up, they had to win to go up. Game played against a backdrop of constant crowd trouble. Was young at the time so memories of the context aren't clear. There was certainly pretty raw jubilation and it wasn't an expected victory. However I think I am right to say our ultimate safety depended on Cardiff losing to Luton 3 days later, which they duly did. This in the days when games were allowed in the midweek following the final weekend of the season - usually in seasons when bad winters meant fixture congestion.

Worth a mention as it was George Mulhall's last match as manager of the club and of course he sadly passed away the other day.

Bolton News failed to mention it in its article about last day scrapes late last week.

Sunday.

To lose the first 49* matches of the season, then turn it around so they weren't adrift.. all while still getting next to eff all from any away game, to looking almost safe with about 6 games left, to looking very almost dead with the last ten minutes of 1 left and needing snookers (which admittedly they were getting).

t'Were summat else.

unbelievable.

we only won back to back games once.

longest unbeaten run - seven games . And five of those were draws..

i suppose if you look at burtons , barnsleys , sunderlands etc ;  they'd be similar , but that 11 weeks at the start, i think only sunderland had a run that bad [their's were terrible, like our Lennon season].

three-ish good six week runs.

the home form did it

Glad as fuck.

amazing

Agree with this, I was going to post earlier that in the future it will  be remembered by me  as similar to the Sheff Weds victory in 1982 to stay in Div 2 but had already been accused of being a miserable twat once today so refrained. You are right that Cardiff had to beat runaway Champions Luton a few day later for us to go down, so our safety wasnt assured but it felt like we'd survived.

If I could relive one match at the  Reebok, as a Scouse hater it would have to be Deano's last minute winner against Liverpool to go top of the division as hot favourites for relegation.I can't say I left the ground any more ecstatic than on Sunday but id always take an unexpected late win over Liverpool than Nottm Forest.

And dramatic late comebacks. The only other "losing going into 87 mins but win"  I can think of is Preston at home 89/90 when i think we left it till the 90th minute and beyond to score the 2 goals.Im sure there must be  others i dont recall...

Wasn't there Sunday due to my bad back but maybe it's an age thing - nothing will ever, ever beat being at Old Trafford and seeing Frankie stick two past United whilst stood in their paddock. Nothing. Ever.I know that Sunday was special but to my dying day that game at OT will live with me forever

They certainly did & only fleetingly mentioned the 3-2 win over Derby (that preceded the Sheff Wed game) which was awesome in front of five & a half thou crowd ( who said Burnden was the mecca)

Similar game to last sunday but with no fucker on

Still up there though.

Yeah, as mentioned above that Derby game was the penultimate game of 81/2 before the Sheff Weds game. I can't place in my mind the sequence of goals in that match but it was certainly 2-2 until very late and we got a dramatic late winner to stay alive in Div 2.

The gate may only have been 5,000 or so but the other thing that sticks in my memory about that Derby game was the big turn out in the Manny Road North terrace - and most of them seemed to be bikers. Their goal celebrations were a sight to behold.

Have to agree with Manc. I blacked out for a short time when Frankie knocked in his second. Over excitement.

Between that game and that night at Ewood for my money.

Sunday was, however, an indelible part of BWFC folklore which we will never forget. Watched it at least half a dozen times since!

Sunday pips Reading for me. Reading in hindsight, had we lost it wouldn't have changed all that much. Rioch still would have gone we'd have still spent relatively little and probably Todd would have led us to promotion the next year.

Had we not performed minor miracles on Sunday I dread to think where we'd be. It is up to Ken now to hammer home the escape and make it really count by bringing in the funding needed - so I guess we still don't fully know the significance. It may ultimately prove to be the major turning point or just a delay of execution.

However, Reading I was giddy with excitement as we hauled back the two goals and knew from then we'd win. It was magical, but the overriding emotion was just sheer excitement and it was off the back of 3 seasons of similarly memorable experiences.

Sunday, was more emotional. We've not had a great time of it, barring promotion last year and we've had all things told a fairly torrid time this season. To turn it round in the last 3 minutes was unexpected to even the most optimistic of fans. Reading visibly tired on the big Wembley pitch and clearly missing the penalty turned the game. On Sunday we turned it round completely out of the blue, and entirely out of character. It meant, so, so much. And I don't think will ever be forgotten. It is also significant in that it was the first real such moment at the Reebok/Macron/?.

Not sure I'd agree. Certain home games v. Leicester and Man United stick in the memory. My not have been as much riding on the result but incredible finishes.

Doesnt matter to me, Sunday is on a par with anything we have ever achieved.

you can take in mitigating circumstances from them all, where we were, what we needed, the consequences etc etc. But down to pure gut wrenching drama, emotion, joy and relief Sunday is up there as a game that will go down in BWFC Folklore forever.

We all have memories of certain games which we still talk about to this day which binds us to the club and im made up i got to witness another on Sunday but also the younger generation (my 14yr old included) also now have one of those days

Sunday was the best for me, just ahead of Reading. The intensity of that rush when the third went in so soon after the second. Probably the closest to that moment was the equaliser at Goodison.

There have been some great games that I been lucky to be at: Liverpool/Arsenal (and Newcastle at home) in the FA Cup, Hull, Swindon 2nd Leg, Wolves in the play offs. At all of these games the crowd played a massive part. Although if I am honest I also loved beating Torquay at Wembley.

I was also at Old Trafford, in the Scoreboard Paddock, when Frankie Worthington beat them on his own. Although it was intensively satisfying to win, especially as it was daylight robbery, I was more concerned with getting home and didn't speak until I got back to the car.

Sunday because I'd thought we'd blown it, both when we lost to Burton and we went 2-1 down with 15 minutes left (and for the next 10 mins)

and by blown it I mean back into a league we only just  got out of last time, and this time it would be with less money and less of a squad, we could've been consigned to league one for a good while (we could've bounced straight back, but couldn't bear to think about it)

when we've been relegated from the PL we've gone back into the Championship with a stronger squad than previous

and as for Reading, as gutting as it would been to have lost, we'd have still been in the Championship

there was so much at stake on Sunday in terms of everything

thing is, we'll probably be in the top 3 favorites to drop next season and will probably have to go through all this again, but for now, the fact we can, it feels fucking great

Not saying there haven't been great moments. But Sunday was the first time I can remember where there was so much riding on a single game and it was so dramatic...

We've only beaten Man U at home once at the Macron and it was in December under Gary Megson 1-0. As good as it was, not sure it was a patch on Sunday.

Pitch invasions, back in vogue now everywhere it seems.

Can't seem to remember any possibility of us going on the pitch after say Boro 2-1 or Sunderland 2-0 to stay up it just didn't seem like a thing to be doing.

I loved it on there, ground feels even more lived in now. Was bleeding hot on there though!

I still think Reading playoff is top of the tree. I would also put the Swindon semi-final 2nd leg match at number two. The carrot was Wembley and Swindon were a pretty good team back then. Early goal for them put them 3-1 up on aggregate. Final whistle went and we were at Wembley for a real game on the big telly. None of your lower league trophy nonsense.

Still got the huge team photo that some enterprising bloke was selling outside the ground that night. It’s on the ceiling of my garage.

I can’t remember Reading so Sunday comfortably takes it for me.

I believe we were 100/1 to win it with 5 minutes left. I probably had us about 1000/1 given our recent scoring record.

It felt like so much more than just safety, but a platform to stabalise a bit after a shite few years. Onwards and Upwards.
