Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted December 30, 2019 Site Supporter Share Posted December 30, 2019 If hall isn't getting a look in, then why not loan him out, free up a space and see if Clough can offer us anything. His style would suit Darcy's footballing skills/brain. Nowt to lose unless someone better is lined up.

Since he first appeared for us (21 goals in 58 apps) he's been at Forest (4 in 27), back to Bolton (1 in 9), Rochdale (0 in 9) so he's hardly set the world on fire with his prolific goalscoring. I get that his game goes beyond how many he scores but I'm not sure how that'd be measured.

Creativity, along with Darcy could be very useful for keeping Daryl Murphy scoring. Especially if we lose verlinden.

Lt. Aldo Raine
Clough was at his best when played just off the centre forward, which is a slight problem because Darcy also plays central. It'd be one or the other I think.

Use them two and Murphy as an alternative front 3? Quite like Dodoo, but he's not the dog's bollocks and was relatively quiet yesterday. 3 midfielders in behind. The thing is, I think we get the best out of Darcy by playing him at the top of the midfield triangle. And with Clough, it's by playing him just off the centre forward. By playing both of them as part of a front three, we don't get the best out of either. If we did re-sign Clough, I'd be tempted to try him in Verlinden's position, where he and Darcy could link up, but I don't know if we'd be better off trying to find a player better suited to beating a man wide and then getting a cross in instead, as that generally tends to be our gameplan. kent_white
I'd have Clough back in a heartbeat. Especially as we've no Ali Crawford. Reckon he'd come back for peanuts as well.

Johnnyrotten
Another factor in taking him is that, assuming we're in Div 2 next season, he'd be too good for that league if we could be brave enough to play 2 up front and take the game to the opposition. Murphy and Clough up front in Div 2 would be ace.
Moderators Casino Posted December 30, 2019 Moderators Share Posted December 30, 2019 Another thing to bear in mind is that the shit in this league is utter shit The difference between 2nd and 3rd tier is immense Clough could tear it apart at his best Whether he's still got his best, who knows, but he couldn't get a game at rochdale

I don't get how you (or most others) think a drop in a league is a huge step down. It's fluid, and as the youngsters come through there will be better talent emerging in lower leagues, they won't all be snapped up by top clubs, and many top players will emerge after being released by so called top clubs. Brentford seem to be soaking up talent in London at the moment, they have historically been a lower league club but I reckon they will be a Premiership club in the next few years. Anyway, my point is that there is loads of good players in the lower leagues and we can't expect to 'walk' league 2 next year.
Moderators Casino Posted December 31, 2019 Moderators Share Posted December 31, 2019 It's not worth arguing about but I think it cos I see it We have a team almost exclusively made up of last day waifs and strays and we are a middling team in this league League above, we wouldn't get a sniff Not a sniff

Aye, it's a drop down, not denying that, but you will still come across quality, and you still will in League 2 or even the Conference. passmosster
League 2 and National League teams are now well organised and fit which sort of neutralises the skill deficit. There's still some stand-out players who end up there. But we never seem to sign any.
