leigh white
On the old lanes of Astley near me, it gives detail's on a card tied to the street sign of any person what was killed in WW1 who lived on that road along with a poppy attached. Really great tribute.

That’s brilliant. astonishing the numbers on there, which we all know and been told, but it’s only when you see it in real terms you can comprehend how it touched everywhere. ive just gone down Bury Rd from Tonge fold to Breightmet ( my neck of the woods) and the numbers on just that bit quite humbling considering most of the streets now weren’t there then also checked my dad’s village in Ireland, loads from there too, including some with same surname as me so I’ll be looking into that a bit more closely so cheers for the link. Recorded it last night and just watched it. Absolutely incredible in the saddest way possible. The way that they slowed the old footage down, colourised it, and voiced it via lip-readers was amazing. So much stuff that I never knew like the shrapnel shells that burst in the air. That’s the most moving thing I’ve ever seen about WW1

Did similar- was focusing on Darcy Lever, as much of the current housing is indeed far too new. Two lads lost from hacken lane, a few doors apart, several from Radcliffe road amongst others. Many of these will have grown up together- shows just what an effect it would have had on a community. Shocking.

Shocking. 10 lads between The Hare and Hounds and the Bulls head. Staggering really.
mickbrown
The terraces between Halliwell Road and Chorley New - It's like every other street loses someone
Site Supporter Cheese Posted November 13, 2018 Site Supporter Share Posted November 13, 2018 'They Shall Not Grow Old' was possibly the greatest hour of film I've ever seen. Apparently there's another 100 hours of footage that has been given the same treatment by Peter Jackson's team, and handed back to The British War Museum, all free of charge and freely available to anyone who wants to use it. The guy deserves massive plaudits.
Not in Crawley
I’ve had the the good fortune to work on The Wipers Times this year, with the Mercian regiment, the latter day Sherwood Forresters. Throughout this there is nothing nationalism, or rather thub thumping. There is fear, and slaughter of young men. If folk want to travel to Europe and shout about their own fearfulness, enjoy it. You don’t represent us, you don’t represent our town, you certainly are not one of us.
