I was flying home from Tenerife once on my own aged 17 my flight was delayed 6 hours then cancelled. They sent us all to the vulcano hotel in las americas for the night. Flight was the following tea time. Was fucking ace. Went to a bar I knew and borrowed some cash and had a great night couldn't imagine a whopping delay now with the kids, I’d have to call it a day and just leave. I've had 3 really long delays (2 this year!) Flying to Mexico a couple of years ago 8 hour delay due to problem with plane. Got smashed at the airport. Flying to Goa this year but couldn't land due to fog so diverted to Mumbai. Spent 4 hours sat on the tarmac, 2 hours waiting to be let in the country, 3 hours waiting for our luggage to be taken off the plane. Eventually put in a 5 star hotel for the night. Landed in Goa the following day 33 hours late! Flying to Kos in October problem with the plane. Spent several hours sat on the plane while they fixed it only for the crew to run out of hours. Spent a few more hours in the airport bar waiting for a new crew, eventually put in the Hilton for the night, had about 3 hours kip before flying the next morning - they got a bigger plane and combined 2 flights I should probably stop using Tui! It's changed massively over the last 4 years or so. Was once delayed 5 hours coming home from Boston when a compressor exploded on one of the starboard engines. We'd got to the top of the runway and the pilot revved the bollocks off the engines but we didn't start rolling. My guess is the pilot had a warning of an issue. Anyway, I had a window seat just behind the wing and a 20' flame came past my window. We limped back to the terminal but weren't allowed off the flight having officially left USA. Five hours later the pilot reported over the intercom that the problem had been fixed and we'd be off as soon as there was an available slot. That five hours meant we landed at Schipol too late for the connecting flight so we needed to be accommodated somewhere. Amsterdam Hilton had the space so we were bussed over to it. We had no money so were given some bar tokens. I was due in work the next day so I phoned in to ask for a day off. "Fucking no chance!" came the reply. "Er, I'm stuck in Amsterdam, I'll explain when I get in but I won't be in tomorrow." The Hilton was fantastic. Got to my room and switched telly on and after flicking through the first 4 or 5 channels of Dutch quiz shows and chat shows, it was a few dozen channels of porn. Bliss! We eventually got back into Manchester 30 or so hours later than we should have landed. My cases, with a few thousand illicit cigarettes in were delayed another 4 days. Finally got the go ahead to take off as snow cleared at Dublin only for the airport to close mid flight, plane diverted to cork, by then I’d had enough got off the plane in cork ate a full Irish breakfast and purchased a flight back to manchester.
