Away Day Moor Lane Coaches

The football special trains reminded me of the time you could get on a coach from Moor Lane in town.

Depending on cost you had the choice of Hargreaves Coaches or Ribble with the latter being bargain basement. I remember Hargreaves been comfy coaches but the ones that Ribble laid on were back breakers for sure.

Did the Newcastle cup game at Elland Rd on Ribble coaches, bunked off school early & changed out of my uniform on the bus into town. Got there late so only me & 1 other bloke got in so the coach fucked off & left us... I was only 13! Managed to thumb a lift home & had to have 2 days off school while they tracked down my uniform & nobody sussed I'd bunked off 😊

The only coach I got from Moor Lane was to Blackpool Mecca. Church Inn Garage coaches in L/H for me in the early days.

Did church inn coaches many times from LH notably Huddersfield in FA cup waiting on the bridge above St. Peter’s way for 100 plus coaches to pass so we could get on, also Klearways travel, booked from Walkden, was it Monks travel the booking office. Who were tatlocks coaches think they used to do Bolton games as well.

That Huddersfield game saw biggest exodus of coaches off Moor Lane I can recall - Ribble did over 100

Am sure Tatlocks had a Farnworth connection ?  Think we went with them to Everton League Cup semi from the Canary on Plodder Lane

Always tried to book with Hargreaves and only went with Ribble when Hargreaves were full - there were some serious not rights who were regulars with Ribble

Can you imagine that happening now. Full scale public inquiry, and sentence for the driver for poor safeguarding.

Not sure which coach firm it  was but a few of us from L/H went down to Leyton Orient in the late 70s / early 80s. Anyhow coach was full going all 52 seats taken but coming home there must have been 70 on it. As we were passing through an area close to white hart lane some lads were jumping out the back of the coach attacking or abusing spurs fans. All sorts were being thrown out of the windows and roof vents before the police turn up and order everyone of the coach. The sergeant then put an old bloke and his grandson back on the coach and told the driver to go leaving all the rest of us stranded. Myself and 2 mates got home about 2am Sunday morning after thumbing 3 lifts all the way home, our kid (isaccunt) didn't get home till late Sunday afternoon.

Got to admit I was panicking when I'd been all over looking for my coach. I was stood near the exit when some bloke in his car with his 9yr old son saw me & clocked that something was wrong. Luckily he lived in Smithills & I lived in Halliwell.

Got to admit, fellow Bolton fans are brilliant. Was stuck in Walton after watching the Everton FA cup tie and knowing i would miss the last train, got talking to a complete stranger near Stanley Park and he give me a lift straight to my local pub, and he lived in Horwich.

THAT night at Blackburn saw me and a mate walking through Harwood towards the Royal Oak where we were going to catch a normal service bus up to Ewood. As we walked past Harwood Precinct, a bloke stopped his car and asked if we were going to match. Hop in.
(Imagine that these days)
Anyway, we got to a car park and off to the match and he said he'd wait after the game. We were celebrating in the ground after the game for about 45 minutes but he was still sat in his car waiting for us.

Another memory is of the double decked buses to Oldham Athletic games.

My first away was going with Tatlocks from the Black Horse in Farnworth to Blackburn 75/76 ish.  Think we won 1-0.  Back on the coach coming home I saw a half-house brick coming straight for my window, luckily it bounced right off the frame.

Tatlocks were based in radcliffe

Stand lane ish

They were great trips as they took the team as well on their “Supercruiser”, on some games the supporters coach and team would leave together and stop off at local chippy’s on the way home. You had to be a proper flask carrying scarfer though to join those trips.

Coming home from a pre season win at Bury on the 524 in the mid 80s.  About a dozen Wanderers on the top deck chatting about the game as a bloke further along gets off at Radcliffe.

We suddenly hear "Bolton bastards!" & this bloke, obviously a Ra-Ra, puce with rage and seemingly on the verge of tears, launches a half brick at the windows.  It went straight over the roof as we all pissed our sides waving at him 😀

We got a lift to Tranmere once on a Friday night in the early seventies off a bloke outside Burnden. He promised to bring us back but he’d gone when we returned.

Had to get a bus to Lime street. Train to Manc. and a long walk home at one in the morning. T**t
