The government’s failure to explain the lack of tests is now embarrassing. Journalists picking up on this all over Twitter. Gove saying a lack of chemicals but Chemical Industries association says this isn’t true and if there was a shortage they could easily increase production.

The journalists all going with Germany as an example. Testing 70,000 a day whereas we’ve still not managed 10,000.

Needs a proper answer.

If they don't have enough, they don't have enough.

That could be tests, people to administer the test, people to analyse results.

You never ever mention what the government have done that is positive, on political matters you are an utter tit and slightly worse than Mick the red.

They've explained it perfectly well. Might not be happy with it, no one is, but if they are struggling to get hold of materials what do you propose?

The answer is clear. Journalists and people alike might not like what they hear, but repeatedly asking the same question over and over isn't going to get a different answer.

As has been said before, wait until later investigations uncover the reality of the situation.

We're literally trialling full face SCUBA diving masks as an option at work for patient's on CPAP (CPAP is like a noninvasive ventilation you can wear while you're conscious).

I think it's a great idea if it works - just seems a comical idea.

Bloke who works for me who’s doing shifts in A&E up near Glasgow. The hospital he’s at is classed as a “Hot Zone” ie patients have or are assumed to have CV. He’s had a moulded mask made for him. Once it’s made they have to put on a space helmet type thing and it’s filled with a stinking (non-harmful) gas to test that its airtight and works. Seems very sensible

Biggest problem he’s faced is that they’ve had plentiful supplies of masks, gloves and other protective gear ordered and stocked but the folk doing the ordering seem to have forgotten that as they are an A&E dept they still need bandages, splints, resus stuff, etc and they ran critically short the other night

What Fan5 is clearly alluding to, is that EU countries seem to be shitting on us in terms of testing.

Anything to shoehorn a Brexit dig in....

They're not though are they?

Germany, yes

Let's look at all the others before we go off on one.

It may be that Germany produces more of the materials we need than we do- they're clearly goin to look after their own first.

If you're putting brexit into things, then the need to boost levels of manufacturing was important for me as we were too low. This now perhaps highlights it in starker terms than ever.

Was it about politics when the Tory party cheered and clapped as they ensured nurses pay was frozen?

We need to review how we are creating a society with such economic disparity. Not in a way of lowering people's aspirations but of raising what people expect a nurse or a doctor or a soldier or a policeman to be paid. And how we want to treat vital public services in the future. That's how priorities need re-evaluating. I'm fairly sure they will be.

Just for balance, let’s be clear

Whilst you can say that Nurses pay was frozen, you can also say that most Nurses got paid more year on year

My wife works in the Public sector, her pay works in the same way as Nurses. let’s say she is band 4, within that band they have 5 levels... level 1 £40k, Level 2 £42k, Level 3 £44k etc

every worker goes up a level each year no matter how you perform (good, bad or ugly) until you are at the top of your band, then you need to get promoted to get into the next band.

Austerity meant that the bands were frozen (band 1 remained £40k, it didn’t move to £41k), but workers moving between levels continued.

What this means is, the majority of Nurses earned more year on year, it also beat inflation which was at zero or near zero for the majority of the days of austerity

The NHS also had its budget increased each and every year between 2010 and 2020

20k a week, give or take

Prob higher in winter

This is lifted direct from the office of national statistics.

  • The provisional number of deaths registered in England and Wales in the week ending 20 March 2020 (week 12) was 10,645; this represents a decrease of 374 deaths registered compared with the previous week (week 11).

  • The average number of deaths for the corresponding week over the previous five years was 10,573; this means that the overall number of deaths in week 12 of 2020 was slightly higher than previous years.

  • Of the deaths registered in week 12, 103 mentioned novel coronavirus (COVID-19), which is 1.0% of all deaths.

  • This is lower than the figures reported by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC) as it takes time for deaths to be reported.

As you say it may be higher in the depths of winter but an extra 10k between Jan and March seems a bit of a stretch. It doesn't include Jockland though so with the drugs and fried food they could make up the numbers.

What is the answer? They’ve avoided answering it. The first time they’ve given an answer is about Chemicals shortages that seems to be untrue.

It was a straight question today why can Germany test 70,000 a day and we can’t do 10,000. So if they have given an answer to that...please explain it.

my daughter is currently bawling her eyes out because she’s just realised she might not see her friends for weeks and weeks. Inconsolable.

what doesn’t help is her big brother upstairs on his Xbox chatting and laughing with all his mates.

Its starting to pinch now.

There’s an app called Houseparty if she has a phone or tablet and she could see them that way. Dunno how old kids are now when they have a phone? Or use someone else’s?

It's called a face fit test and is a legal requirement for anybody who wears a close or tight fitting face mask.

You need to ensure that the air you breathe in while wearing the mask come via the filtered bit and doesn't leak in from elsewhere

You are increasingly appearing stupid.

They have said several times materials are short.

You can choose to believe them or not, your choice, but as usual you've no evidence of the contrary.

Just being argumentative as ever.

Fucking do one.

I’m making the bands up

But in your opinion, as a Nurse, would you say that nurses generally earned the same year on year (frozen) or most earned more year on year because of the banding system? (In the age of austerity)

I’m no Conservative, I wasn’t a massive fan of austerity either but I don’t think it’s helpful saying Nurses pay was frozen, it’s generally the same ones who claim Nurses are using food banks

The people that make the materials say that’s not true though. And have said the government haven’t requested an increased supply. So if that’s the issue why haven’t they asked for more to be produced? And that doesn’t explain why Germany are able to test on such a vast scale.

They haven’t answered it. Full stop.

Does this not answer the question?
