A former Labour cabinet minister was on Newsnight the other night saying that a Pandemic like this has been top of the ‘risk register’ forever and successive governments going back decades from both sides have failed to make adequate provision for if / when it finally happened

Problem is, at the planning stage, you haven't aclue how bad it'll be until it happens.

You can't put too much money into planning for this either in case it never actually happens.

Talk about the planners being between a rock and a hard place.

Amusing that people are just looking for someone to blame.

One of the girls mums from work got 999 to fairfield today. She works on a covid 19 ward there and couldnt breathe. Mid 50s, fit as a fiddle.

Found out today that at Fairfield if your over 50 and swab as positive they are asking you to agree to a DNAR. Under lying conditions or not.

This is appalling and if it’s true and I’m not doubting your integrity it’s a breach of human rights and should be reported to the GMC

spot on. Everyone (including me im guilty of it in the past) needs to stop viewing Trump and his nutcase defenders on Fox News as in any way a hero or amusing. At times of crisis like this he is so totally out of his depth it is embarrassing. And people will die because of his attitude. his latest comments on face masks another prime example completely undermining his own experts advice. What a tool

Not sure about that

Doesnt DNAR mean mouth to mouth resuscitation? In an ordinary world that’s fine but that puts the healthcare worker carrying out the mouth to mouth at significant risk surely

I’d be surprised if they give mouth to mouth to anyone who has this virus

Who needs to fuck about with PPE if your going to end up giving CPR anyway

Trump telling US citizens to wear a basic cloth or fabric mask, or a homemade one. Jesus.

Maybe he’s getting it from here.

Im pretty sure the NYT are not Trump supporters. I’ve mentioned a few times now that they have been mandatory in the Czech Republic in public for weeks now and they have a very low death rate. South Korea, Thailand, Hong Kong all wear masks and again a low death rate.

Well according to that graph above we are bang on target.

One thing I never knew before all of this was how many homosexuals lived in my area.

When I go for a walk the amount of 30+ yr old male couples I see cycling alongside each other and happily chatting away has been a real eye opener.

Is that what all the rainbows I've seen in windows are about?

Come on Mounts, that’s clearly nonsense

The government haven’t asked all and sundry (Dyson etc) to turn to making Ventilators from scratch in a few weeks because we are in a comfortable position in terms of numbers (might be now, but won’t be when we get near a peak)

The Governor of New York, one of the richest areas in the world is banging on every day over how they don’t have anywhere near enough ventilators

The fact is, their isn’t anywhere near enough in the world to deal with this Pandemic, no matter what country your in. Same can be said for PPE to a certain extent

A former Labour cabinet minister was on Newsnight the other night saying that a Pandemic like this has been top of the ‘risk register’ forever and successive governments going back decades from both sides have failed to make adequate provision for if / when it finally happened

Then again, not many who end up on a ventilator come off them alive from what I can see, they were on the news the other day cheering as they finally got the first patient off one and into recovery.

We understand all that.

Don't know if you saw JVT but he was categoric that we are not yet near going beyond capacity.

He didn't say it won't happen, and that is why all and sundry are being asked to help produce new ones.

And why we're asked to stay home.

Can also understand why certain folk are being asked to sign these forms, albeit very unpalatable.

It’s clear we are gearing up and rightly so, but Van Tam says currently we are nowhere near capacity of ventilators or icu beds,  I’ll take his opinion over the likes of fan5 who said this.

Agreed. Not saying we won’t run out as it’s looking increasingly likely but as it stands, today, it would appear we haven’t run out simple as that

The bit about it ‘being a breach of human rights’

I can’t see how it’s a human right to get mouth to mouth resuscitation if it means the Health worker carrying it out is at significantly increased risk

But Mickey has informed me that it isn’t mouth to mouth so I don’t see the benefit to a DNAR for the health service

Perhaps it’s semantics then

I think it’s fair enough to say we don’t have enough ventilators due to the fact that we need thousands in a matter of days / weeks

Governments all over the world have all admitted they they don’t have enough to deal with the virus

Also, with regards the Italy but, I think it’s been clear for sometime that we are about 2 weeks behind them in terms of the curve

We don’t know how many ventilators we are going to need and it’s impossible to plan for such uncertainty  and It’s not yet clear that our death rates will eclipse or match Italy,  let’s wait and see.

Wait and see?

with or without a huge stash of ventilators?

No, but clearly health professionals think we don't have enough to meet the coming demand. It's for that reason people of a certain age are being asked to sign DNARs.
