Economy would still have been fooked to an extent even if we'd done a New Zealand or a Sweden. NZ having to pump $50 billion into their economy despite containing the virus , Swedish business with international supply chain are suffering, and their economy isn't expected to fare any better than other Nordics (all with vastly less deaths) Very tricky to balance. Going to be worldwide this slump. On the whole, think I'd much rather be in NZ at the moment, no restrictions, proper quarantine rules for international visitors, hardly any deaths.

We will find out how the Swedish second quarter has gone tomorrow, experts are predicting GDP of -7% (I think we are expecting -25% and the US -32%)

Much of the Swedish economic decline is driven by weak exports as other markets have been shut down, rather than reduced spending within the country

Sweden’s death rate per 100,000 is one of the highest in Europe at 56, but then again I think we are above 60

Sweeden also have a benefit that a greater number have had it, so should theoretically be immune from a second wave. Antibody tests in Sweden would indicate 14% have had it (think it’s only 6% here?)

If cases are still rising but deaths aren't, is there a possibility the virus is losing its potency?

Guess we'll see in a few weeks as it takes some time. Also claims that more younger people are getting it at the moment.

Opening schools may still require some employers to be flexible with staff, as many won't want grandparents collecting kids before they get home. That was part of the reason for shielding/closing schools in the first place.

A minefield.

Not impossible, but certainly challenging.

we all have to do our bit here, it’s a war of sorts.

Sanitise hands, wear masks. One way systems.

By the time September rolls round they’ll have had 6 months to prepare.

Obviously apart from the 6 week summer break.....

I'll say it again, just so it's crystal clear..

Teachers are NOT TO WEAR MASKS, following government guidance. Kids are also not to wear masks.

It's not safe for me to go to my mums for a brew in her garden, but it's safe for me to be shut in a room with 30 teenagers, with the government telling me I am not allowed to wear a mask.  Makes perfect sense.

I'll do what i'm told and go back to work in September, doesn't mean I'm happy about it. I'm ina  better place than many

Its exactly the same as the justification for allowing folk to meet in pubs not back gardens

The country needs pubs ooen

The country needs schools open

Dunno why we need parks open!

Why no masks for teachers anyway, what about visors?

Lots of friendly football matches getting arranged after the initial relaxation from Aug 1st.  Local fa guidance ( last I saw) after the tightening up last week was to continue with guidance issued in relation to starting back safely
cant see how that’s ok but sitting in a relations garden isn’t ?
I’m glad it is on like but can’t see the logic

Aye, my kids having them as well apart from one last week when the other team cancelled simply because we were from Bolton after the announcement on Greater Manchester ... Loads more planned but same kids / teens can’t go and sit in their cousins garden , that’s the bit I don’t get even though I’m glad football is allowed back .

In the other corner you have an economy staring down the abyss

The number of friends I have who have been put on notice of redundancy these past few weeks is frightening, all of which are well paid professionals. Most of them have been employed 10 years + so will get reasonable redundancy but it won’t last long and the jobs market doesn’t look very appealing. No housing benefit for house owners either, soon be squeaky bum time!

Limited scope for the government to extend furlough, VAT cuts and Business rates relief deep into 2021

It’s not as easy as just shutting down large swathes of the economy until we have a vaccine (could be years away)

This.

As an example of the potential housing issue, during the lockdown my daughters partner, who is a self employed plasterer was unable to work, the daughter had become redundant while on maternity leave as the company she worked for had become insolvent (mid 2019 so pre- corona). They had no income whatsoever so were told to claim universal credit, this amounted to just over £400 a month, their mortgage alone is almost £800 a month, they pointed this out and were informed that they wouldn't be able to claim any sort of housing allowance for six months. Luckily they had some savings and we were able to help them out to keep them afloat.

Daughter has now got a part time job and they are both working again but are reliant on family to look after the little one for the three days a week that both are in work. Strictly speaking the only person who should be able to mind the kiddy would be somebody who is a single person who has 'bubbled' with them, nobody fits that description. If one of them gives up work to stay at home with him they wouldn't have anywhere near enough coming in to pay the bills.

Multiply this by hundreds of thousands if not millions of families across the land.

Don't know if its been mentioned but reading the new york times article on schools reopening in Israel is a great way to ruin your day. Pretty concerned about September now.

I'll be massively surprised if we don't have a similar experience in some schools,  especially when it gets colder and folk start shutting the windows. I'm sure the govmt have thought it through, but If I was opening schools up I'd do it in a phased manner. There will still be kids with furloughed parents in Sept, parents working from home, some unemployed, unfortunately. I'd be tentative and reduce the numbers in school at any one time to start with, see how it goes. I'd prefer that to schools shutting down completely because of an outbreak. I'll be surprised if the first term back isn't disrupted in some way.

Daughter and her fella both tested negative. Test dinner yesterday, result 6am today

Tick!

Reason they went is that his mate and his mates dad are positive. His mum and sister live in same house and tested negative

Two positives is nearly enough for a spike. Lock the north down.

Tell you what,

the opinion of some teachers is shocking. Someone's just put on a closed group that masks are a bit pointless anyway as they're not fitted etc and worn incorrectly,

absolute torrent of abuse from teachers who clearly are looking for excuses to get out of work. It's a bit embarrassing really.

More like it.

The opinion of teachers is shocking on here generally, yet folk are more than happy to hand over there horribly behaved little shits for babysitting, sorry, education.
