It'd be nice, but even if it existed then, surely it'd take months and months to manufacture, distribute and eventually administer

They have to get through the licensing and approval first after (if) the trials have proved it safe and effective. If I understand correctly we are still under European approval for any vaccine until we leave the EU. Basically they use a European state as a reference country that then allows approval across all states (can be good, can be bad, but that’s a separate argument). Once that’s gained you’re then looking at manufacturing being in place with all its QA/QC demands. Then you have supply chain and how it’s distributed. Then you have the problem of who will administer the vaccine. Then you have the problem of who gets it, where and when

Granted, a lot of this stuff will happen in parallel rather than sequentially but personally I’m not holding out much hope for anything this year. I may of course be completely wrong

If the oxford one comes off, then at least its being made currently so some time will have been cut.

Not sure if other ones are being made prior to approval, but it would be worth a gamble, especially if a government is underwriting the cost.

True mate but all the other issues still exist unfortunately

The headline is a bit misleading, it sort of implies that 64,000 died because of flu....but it's actually 64,000 people died full stop, including flu, old age, cancer, heart attacks and anvils falling on heads etc.

Irrespective, its got fuck all to do with what's going on now, but I guess it keeps Twitter types amused

Did you see the thing about 'artificial antibodies '?

Just a fleeting glimpse yesterday, but another trial in the uk with synthetic ones or some such.

Maybe peelyfeet can shed some light, but it might take the weight off you donating.

Looking beyond the headline

"The killer flu outbreak is to blame for a 42 per cent spike in deaths across England and Wales, statisticians claim.

Government figures reveal 64,157 people died in January - significantly higher than the death toll of 45,141 recorded in December.

Latest figures show the flu outbreak has killed at least 271 people, but this is likely to be an underestimate because it only counts for confirmed hospital deaths"

I've been sidelined temporarily anyway, after giving them 11 pints, because they've fucked my veins up. Last donation, they had six goes at getting the needle in, it wasn't fun. So I'm "on the bench" to be called up again if/when required later in the year.

The good news is that I don't have to go to Luton every two weeks now

Couldn't get to mine first time round, gave it a good try and said "nope, not happening.".

Apparently the vein they take from and put back in with is underneath the muscle rather than ontop. Was pretty gutted tbh

Have you had a positive test, then?

Nope, because when I had it they were only offering tests to people who were admitted to A&E. (Mid March)

Their screening process and the nurse at the donation place were happy that I'd had symptoms. I still don't 100% know despite being 99% certain that's what it was.
