No idea of post beginning of September but there’s a fair bit of press about release of figures then

https://www.google.co.uk/amp/s/news.sky.com/story/amp/male-suicides-at-highest-rate-in-two-decades-official-data-shows-12060928

One would not imagine it’s gone down since. And a lot of mental struggles brought on by the recent tiered limitations, lockdowns, affected social and business/job issues will be felt to come for years.

Anecdotally, I have a friend who committed covid related suicide this summer and know a few folk through work that are suffering terribly with mental health ATM, miles more than I’ve ever known before

Yes I’ve seen a similar report to that, that shows an increase last year and a decrease this year (2nd quarter) but them figures are to be taken with a pinch of salt as official reports can take upto 5 months.

There’s many on social media using the “suicides are through the roof” to back up their argument but there’s nothing official yet

I haven't seen anything from official sources to say suicide rates are up. However you would have thought they would be. I know two marriages that have broken down in the last month that have surprised me, lockdown has certainly put a strain on folk.

As someone who has suffered myself, I can only thank luck that (fingers crossed) I haven't been too bad, even with the shit weather and dark nights now. I think the kids have helped; we play darts, mobile games, wii, board games etc. Now they are older we enjoy watching the telly together too, Celebrity for example or Gogglebox with the eldest. Simple things.

Define 'underlying'.

Overweight

Diabetic

Heart problems

chest problems

disabilities

mental health issues

auto immune diseases

people who are recovering or have cancer

anyone who has severe medical needs.

That's a lot of people...

Pure speculation

It isnt.

Unfortunately, until the vaccine is given en masse, it isn't known if it will stop illness and transmission or just illness.

I dont understand how it can stop the illness but still allow transmission, but that comes from all those in the know.

Its based on knowledge of these individuals so hardly speculation.

On the flip side do you not  think the lockdown may have helped in some cases? I know a few lads who have taken their own life over the years and the majority of them have been after a drug/drink fuelled session. Obviously the lockdown has had a knock on effect for the “seshhh”
Theres also people who were close to losing their business pre COVID and were showing severe signs of depression yet now they have never been this well off.

Was talking about this the other day and you’re right.

I won’t lie, it’s not really caused me personally any hardship this year. I wouldn’t have chosen it, but like a good many people I know, the government have well and truly wrapped their arms around a huge amount of people.

There are plenty who have suffered and of course died, but there’s no escaping the fact that this has been a very easy year for many.

Not sure what the future holds, but you’re dead right that plenty secretly won’t be too bothered about a year off.

Of course every case is different.

However, the likes of the Samaritans have said calls to their helpline have increased this year especially when there have been extended restrictions.

Like Spider has said, many people have done well despite or even because of Covid work wise. I know I have done OK and work is busier than ever and will get even more so thanks to Huawei being binned.

But I think more will be worse off, if not financially then in other ways. I know personally some old folk who are feeling very low, it isn't nice to see a frail old dear cry from a distance.

But my son has been really struggling and lockdown has been very difficult for him. Self isolation even more so. Thank god we have a camhs therapist already (12 month waiting list) and have the money to pay for a private counsellor also. The alternative doesn't bear thinking about.

Texting the family member who's in. Honestly would not wish this on anyone, in fact it's annoying me that there are covid deniers still.

Apparently the staff there just look shattered and worn through

It is quite common in the wife's hospital for other wards to send pick'me'up gifts to ED (A&E) as they are so stretched all the time. They all now send them to ICU and Covid wards as they are overwhelmed.

Fucking moonman who deny it's existence get right on my tits

I've just sent in a big tub of heroes for one of the ward staff rooms,

thought it was quite apt :)

i don't get this. What were these marriages based on, if staying at home with family is straining..?

If you're in a good relationship, spending more time with loved ones should be beneficial

Problem is there are a lot of bad relationships.

Whilst I would agree, not every marriage is based on that.

Both these had grown up kids who didn't need looking after so I wonder if they had grown apart long ago and life just cracked on for years. They then had to stick together for months and realised they just didn't click any more.

Dunno. Every fucker is different I suppose. Loads of folk cheat and break up all the time.  But January is the busiest month for family solicitors year in year out.
