Watching an epidemiologist on sky last night, saying that the variants are a concern because the virus has learned how to make younger people poorly more often.

Just because it’s mutated in Brazil, doesn’t mean it won’t mutate here again and it’s why we really need to get case numbers right down. Our numbers now are prime for mutations.

America is fucked. But we knew that.

It's a clever virus that's for sure, and there are already dozens of different variants - just wait to see what happens if/when it mutates that it can make children/toddlers poorly........and wait to see what happens if it makes the leap into domestic pets like cats and dogs, there would have to be a massive pet cull potentially

As mentioned before, the last thing the virus want's to do is actually kill it's host, it just wants to make it ill - as it's been happily killing the oldies, it needs to change/adapt and that's possibly why it's moving on to younger people.

Disappointing interview with minister for safeguarding on tv just now. Asked about the fact we have vaccine centres claiming they could be doing a lot more vaccinations but are being told the can’t have more. So how will opening more centres help increase daily vaccination rates if there’s no more vaccine to give? Wouldn’t really commit to it but she kind of suggested the amount available each day was unlikely to increase any time soon because there’s no way to increase the rate of checking of each batch. Which means we aren’t getting close to the 14m target in mid February.

Boots chief just been on sky news he reckons they could do 500k jabs a week.

They would be able to, there is a Boots in most towns these days - so hopefully they can roll that our quickly. I saw an interview with him this morning and he said they would initially be opening up 6 stores today to do it......what use is that? - They are hoping to open up to 200 places later this month, and that would make a huge difference. Why this wasn't already put in place before now I really don't understand

One bloke thinks domestic cats are the prime cause of Covid (because  a lion cught it in bronx zoo), Boris knows this, and he decided that letting a load of old people die would be better than culling all the cats because of the political unrest cat lovers would have caused in the UK, and Sage is funded by Cat food companies!

That's a cracker

Welcome back Peely

mate that was a tame one, there's some mentally unhinged people about - one woman ( a spiritual healer from  Middleton ) thinks volunteering to help the vaccination programme is the same as throwing babies into a furnace  - they're seriously tapped.

What happened to the Lion?🦁

it roared back into health after a few days - theres some other lions with it in barcelona apparently, but it's supposedly rare.

I'm going to make sure I socially distance from any Lion I come into contact with, just to be sure

JVT was saying a rapid vaccine roll out can also lead to the virus mutating quicker too as it searches for more 'friendly' hosts.

Vaccine numbers will be interesting round here today, lots of snow. People won't be able to get there.

Hello chaps - sorry I've been busy fighting knobheads on conspiracy websites for the last few months. Some of the shit they believe is mind warpingly outstandingly bonkers.

I've given up fighting them, fuck em.

Good news is;

Cases are down

7 day average is now 53.5k - it's dropped every day for 4 days, so it is now a confirmed trend - first time it's dropped for about 6 weeks.

The vaccine is working very well in Israel (where theyve vaccinated 21% of the population) according to early reports  - infections in those vaccinated are substantially lower than in the non vaccinated.

Theres no evidence to show that any of the mutations will have much effect on the vaccine efficacy. Vaccines are designed to create antibodies that attach to several parts of the protein spike, the mutations only alter the shape of a very small part of the spike, so the antiobodies that attach to the non mutated sections, still work.

We are 4th in terms of vaccine distribution by population - 4.6% of the population have had their 1st shot now.

In short, I truly believe this is the beginning of the end of the shittest part.

bad news is - because of the lag, we've got loads of deaths to come until mid Feb at least, but I think we will start to see sharp declines in the cases, and more so in the hospitalisations and deaths as the vaccine kicks into the older population.

so it's going to be shit for a few weeks - but the end is in sight!

and trump got impeached!

2 reasons to celebrate

Sorry mate that is bullshit. No one likes cats.

Yeah, he was simplifying a bit, it doesn't really make mutations happen any faster, it just creates a situation that allows a mutated virus to flourish faster - say the vaccine is 95% efficacious against the current strain and only 80% against a new one, the new one would take over because it becomes more prevalent.

The issue we are going to have is that realistically we need all the world to get vaccinated, if we don't the mutations are going to rumble on in poor countries, so worldwide we arent going to get rid of it for a while, Van tam thinks never, but some others think it's possible - it doesnt mutate as mucg as flu virus does, so you may only need a shot every few years if this happens, and tweaking the existig vaccine is much faster - most of the ingredients are usually exactly the same as the original so creating it, testing and getting it authorised is a lot quicker.

Govt look fucking stupid if supply stops them hitting targets, unless the supply chain is disrupted by factors that are new.
