I would have thought Romanians would be more into collecting and picking up scrap metal than picking fruit 🙄

Begging is the career of choice for them in Edinburgh. Each have their own spot daily (although suspect not currently). They get dropped off in the morning in a sprinter van and all collected at night and taken back to the large detached house in the street behind my in laws. In laws house is worth about 0.5m and the Romanians house is slightly bigger with a bigger corner plot as well. Go figure

Pretty sure they went in to lockdown

And theres loads more on their way

Which is odd as youd have thought we couldve done it ourselves

Nigel was on the radio last night saying its a disgrace that we're bringing these people in, as he knows dozens of people who would jump at the chance to pick fruit

We don't know how many people have died in the UK but we do know it's a lot higher than the "hospital deaths" figure, so claiming that those 4 countries have a higher death rate than us is illogical. Potentially we have the worst death rate in the world. Apart from San Marino obviously.

The point that they are like for like

Not that death rates at this phase inform us much, I expect

No surprise, but for them that do come over to the UK to work legitimately and gain a better life they just give them a bad name.

Completely agree and it was a sweeping generalization I made there.
most of the car washes round here are staffed by Romanians or Albanians and these boys graft.

its a sorry state of affairs when we cannot get our own work shy bastards out into the fields and we are having to fly in these people to pick fruit.

If they refuse to work refuse to pay them a penny. Simple

wait until we get reports from more third world and developing countries, with basic medical facilities, malnutrition, high population density, communal living, lack of fresh water, no working from home or furlough, no stimulus packages, initially it's' going to be dreadful in comparison to how the West experience it I fear.

Their only saving grace is they will likely get to herd immunity before us, so it might not be as long for them, but I expect they'll have it much worse overall.

I don’t think it’s that; I read, fleetingly, that farmers were incentivised to bring in folks from overseas.

Happy to be wrong, as ever

Maybe

And they don’t have the same age profile as us

I've just noticed that pennine health trust - basically oldham rochdale bury are particularly slow at reporting deaths - their figure for today - 27 deaths,  includes multiple patients who died 3 and 2 weeks ago. Bolton, Wigan, Manchester seem like they're on the ball.

Proper Lancashire redneck places though are Bury, Rochdale and Oldham 😉

Yeah, so that report in tbe MEN saying Bolton and wigan are the growth hotspots is greater Manchester would look a bit different if it was done today.

450 deaths in total today, it is a Monday so should be taken with caution, but much lower than last Monday, almost the same as the Monday before that. Good signs

Aye, you know better than the official figures, check the death per rates per million, were nowhere near the worst. (Granted wish it was better) Why folk like you seem to want to portray the UK in the worst possible light, I just don’t get mentality like yours.

Just checked, we're currently 5th worst with 237 deaths per Million people  -  so in fairness to Mounts, Belgium have twice the problem that we have, we have a large number, but as a percentage, their number looks a lot bleaker

1st: Belgium (503)

2nd: Spain (446)

3rd: Italy (391)

4th: France (302)

5th: UK (237)

6th: Netherlands (219)

I've excluded San Marino and Andorra, as they're not real countries......

Read somewhere that the Romanians were skilled pickers and coming over to train seasonal workers.. They are early due to having to be in 2 week isolation.

Also read that 1000's had applied to pick, a lot less actually bothered with the interview, and even fewer took the job on. I wouldn't go working in a field all day, but then again I'm not out of work, so it isn't a fair comparison.

It's also down to Logistics.. nobody is picking fruit in Farnworth.. Whereas Southport, surrounded by fields... is quite affluent with low rates of unemployment.

Figures are well down.

When are pubs opening?

I reckon they'll be the last thing to open, for fairly obvious reasons. What do we reckon, realistically? - middle of June, maybe start of July?

Agree mate. I've read similar things as & seen a couple of interviews with farmers. Apparently British folk applied in a lot of places, only to be turned down.

If you're furloughed you're not allowed either.

One farmer said when seasonal workers come they don't have a family to support or other life admin- so their sole focus is the job & working as many hours as possible.

I thought that you could get a second job elsewhere, if you were furloughed (provided your employer agrees)  - I don't really know too much about it, as it's not affected me or my company yet though, so happy to be proved wrong
