I don't understand why plod allowed these twats in Brizzle to pull down that statue and dump it in the drink. Not right

I was amazed there was a statue of a slave trader up.
I was more amazed that a few years ago the locals voted to keep it.

Yes I'm surprised, but that's not the point it's criminal damage. If a few pissed up lads on a Friday night did the same thing they would be banged up. Let's hope a few early knocks on the door happen tomorrow.

Even our very own Leverhulme has his skeletons

Where does it end

I'm a big fan of Raheem Sterling but to hear him say on the news the only disease around at the moment is racism seems so irresponsible, covid has just become a footnote now.

I go on Twitter for 5 minutes, see a Union flag on fire, some cunt retweeting Farage talking about race riots and Stan Collymore offering people out. I'm switching off.

Just now, Mr Grey said:

Cue John Barnes.

Unfortunately for Raheem he is ill advised and maybe a bit naive. Top footballer, likeable lad, made great strides in the last couple of years after having a raw deal off the English Media. Perhaps emotion has got the better of him.

Barnes has been sticking up for Keith lemon hasn’t he?

Collymore posted a picture of the England football to show how in a meritocracy you get a strong ethnic mix. I have asked where the non black minority ethnic groups are. He has not replied.

They are failing to mention that he injected his "ill gotten gains" into charities, schools and hospitals..

Judging peoples actions from 300 years ago by today's standards.

It’s why it’s complex

i don’t feel guilty for shit that white folk did before I was born

but if it enslaved folk of another colour I don’t blame them for wanting reminders gone (Bristol slave trader for example)

Where does it end? Well, I guess when it stops having a detrimental effect on you sounds A sensible point?

Is a black man today more likely to have a shit time and slavery had an effect on that? Yeah probs

the Romans conquered England and there were atrocities. Does that make your life harder now? No. So not worth getting. Pissed about.

no idea what the Leverhulme reference is as a non Boltonian BTW

That is a pathetic argument. Let’s have a Jimmy Saville statue for his kids TV programmes.
300 years ago not everyone was involved in the slave trade.
I am not condoning people damaging statues please do not feel the need to justify the slave trade.

I'm not justifying the slave trade.. I'm stating why he has a statue.

So a man makes a fortune shipping people round the world to be sold as slaves makes a fortune and spends a bit in the town. Then he gets a statue.
So just ignore where the money came from ? Surely anyone can see why that should piss people off ?
You do not have one without the other.

First question should be where does it start. If part of recognising that the slave trade was a bit dodgy is not having statues of people who got rich on it I would be OK with that as a starter. The people down there voted to keep it so I would not be ripping it down.

The statues should stay. They’re history.

But a statue is not ‘history’ it is a recognition/praise for an individual. If it is history I assume there is reference on there to how and where he made his money.

Is that steam engine thing still in Bolton town centre? If so it needs smashing up or graffiti all over it. Steam power. In the North West. Powering the cotton trade. Where did cotton come from? How did it get here? Our town was built on the back of heinous crimes. Smash the fucking thing up. Hang your heads in shame WWayers. We are all complicit. This sense of shame is never ending
