I'd scrap HS2 and plough all the money allocated in to this. it sounds a nice idea, but if anybody thinks this Conservative government are going to axe HS2 and plough the money into giving Leigh a train station, then I'd suggest they might be a bit mad. Rightly or wrongly, I'd expect HS2 to still go ahead (despite spiraling costs, even before they've laid a single bit of track) and lip service given to reversing the Beeching cuts, with maybe one or two provincial lines re-opened across the full length and breadth of the country

You'd be seriously pissed off if you had your house compulsory purchased then they don't build it Has any major government programme ever been delivered on budget? If it is then a brand new one must be an astronomical cost given the existing infrastructure. Borders Railway between Edinburgh and Galashiels (30 miles) cost £294m in 2012. gonzo
They’ve been on about it near me for donkeys years. At the end of my road there’s the old level crossing which is now closed and the old signal box house thing is a converted house. Next door is the old milk station which is also a house. There’s £400k minimum in compulsory purchase alone right there and that’s just 20 yards of the track. Thornton station behind my local has been kept nice as some train society geeks have kept it open in some vein hope of running steam trains on there, but they’d have to build a new station there, as well as proper station in fleetwood. Then there’s the trains to run on em. The cost would be absolutely absurd and for what purpose? To take people from poulton to fleetwood? It’s £6 in a taxi or £2 on a bus for anyone desperate enough to actually want to go to the big shit hole. It took em 5 years to electrify Preston to Manchester lines and they still haven’t bought proper trains to run on em. So fuck knows how long it’d take to electrify a train track that’s been redundant for 50 years. Is it really worth the hassle to ferry a few folk 6 miles down the road? Sweep
It is all a bit farcical really I don't think anybody sensible actually thinks any of these tracks/lines are going to be reopened. The government will give it a bit of lip service, then decide to do nothing, as per usual.

If it was I’m thinking they’ll spend it or risk be held to account. Edited January 29, 2020 by Mounts Kipper

The current active network needs much more than that spending on it so they will meet the pledge no probs

Brand new trams run between B/Pool and Fleetwood, somebody getting a back hander for a feasibility study to give the locals the impression the Tories are doing a good job and in reality, it's a no brainer. As we know though, £500M will get about 2 miles of track, so they can commit that money, but it won't really do anything
