Neal was appointed in Dec 85 and took the club to the Freight Rover Final in 1986 losing it 3-0. There was a bit of  spending money from the cup run which was spent on Steve Elliott and Mike Salmon. They weren't good signings and we were relegated in 1987. At this point eighteen months into Neal's tenure he wasn't a popular man to put it mildly

Now theres a good example of a bolton keeper who couldnt handle the boo boys

He wasnt shit but he was targetted

He was so shit, we were in 3 and 4 and he was playing in the top league for charlton

Matthews needs to keep his head up

I remember him saving a last minute penalty at Walsall that season after we'd surrendered a 3-1 lead but Neal brought Felgate in towards the end of the season.Elliott had done well for Walsall but was slow and a poor finisher for us

No

18 months

Dec 85 til summer 87

Fair enough- it was a long time ago!

He still managed to rebuild and put a more professional ethos into the place. As has been said, brought in good players.

For me, KH is taking us down the opposite route.

I'd be more forgiving if he wasn't full of bullshit during interviews; but gave a more measured assessment of the issues and a semblance of a plan for the short to medium term.

One thing that must be remembered is when clubs turn to shit it takes a long time turn them around, that was certainly the case with Phil Neal, now if FV think Hills the right man to turn it round then we will just have to grin and bear it.

And wasn’t it Neal who signed McAteer and gave Stubbs his debut, which for many was the start of some of the best years as a fan.

Didn’t he sign Andy Walker as well?

Been some depressing afternoons and evenings at the Unibol in the last few seasons but that was one of the very worst. 1st half wasn't bad, some decent passing and movement, couple of good efforts from Hamilton, and going in 0-0 would have set 2nd half up in a much different way.

Second half, they hadn't threatened, we were just starting to look promising then shot ourselves in the foot again. That was in the 62nd minute, over 30 from the end, our clueless, shapeless, half arsed efforts from then on at getting back into were a disgrace. Not a single chance created or any concerning moments for their keeper or defence, despite them playing into the teeth of the wind. Far too many of those who'd looked decent first half completely disappeared, there was zero width,  zero quality, zero attempts. Absolutely mind numbing dross.

To be fair you started off saying it was one of the very worst, then said the 1st half wasnt bad.  That immediately means there's at least a dozen worse games in the last 3 seasons.  If anyone thinks I'm exaggerating I'd be happy to list 12 games that were worse than yesterday, I wouldn t even have to think about them, they are etched in my mind unfortunately.  I honestly think yesterday felt worse because of the weather, and that's not to pretend it was good because the 2nd half was terrible. But we were terrible for the last hour, which is half an hour better than many games.

We were outplayed by Wycombe. Not some big spending mad championship bastards. Wycombe. Anyone who pretends it isn’t plumbing the depths right now is kidding themselves. It feels proper 1980’s hell. Only plus is we still survive and will rise again.

Aye, at Chester losing 0-2 under Rioch at half time at the new Deva Stadium, came back to draw 2-2. 18th in the league, a fan boycott the following game and an unbeaten run what saw us getting promoted along with beating Liverpool and Wolves away in the FA Cup in the same season. Mental.

Hello all, Chester FC supporter here.

My team didn’t have a game yesterday so I went on a groundhop to your game as I had never visited the University Of Bolton Stadium before. I have compiled a match vlog which shows all of the goals plus much more, so feel free to watch if you wish:

Best of luck to you for the rest of the season.

Thanks, Rio Doherty.

The weather had bugger all to do with it, I've been on there on dozens of colder, wetter, windier days than that thanks. It was one of the very worst, in my opinion of course, because of the manner of the goals conceded, the timing of them, and the dismal, witless surrender in the second half. All that, and the fact that it's only February and it feeling like another long, slow death sent me home as fed up as I've been for a long time, and I go back to the last time we tumbled into League 2

Had nothing going forward yesterday. I feel sorry for Matthews hes getting loads of grief and the defence didnt win a header from a cross all day, the organisation in defence is terrible, what are they doing in training?? They offer nothing in attack, this should be treated as the longest preseason ever building for next year but I can't see any progress.. Hill comes across as a typical boltonian United fan arrogant and clueless with a complete lack of self awareness.

That would be ideal, but you just know we'll still be finalising the squad in the last 2 days of August.  Thanks to the transfer embargo, we get the players that haven't managed to get fixed up on better contracts elsewhere, or that start the season elsewhere and realise they aren't going to get a game (not unlike the 9 signings we made at the end of August).  I'm confident we'll get some half decent players for Div 2 by 1st September, but I expect it to be a slow start to the season, with no real pre-season as a squad.

Wycombe may be a small club but they are a better team than the defeats we had 2 years ago to Swindon, Chesterfield, Oldham, Charlton (I forget which of those were 10 men).  I'd say if you thought we better in those games than we were yesterday you're kidding yourself.  But I get that you're talking about the situation generally rather than yesterday's game, which is what I was responding to.  I've seen far worse than yesterday, but of course the current situation is the worst ever, that's not really news and isnt really effected by losing 2-0 to a team likely to be promoted.
