Zero point in a Panel deciding results, they need to get the PL games done so they don’t lose £750m, they won’t get that if a panel just makes the results up

Honestly can’t see any litigations taking place, it’s a once in a hundred years act of god event, no way through it without upsetting one side or another (unless they manage to get through this and next season unscathed - unlikely)

Its pointing towards finishing this season whenever but then a shortened season next year, that will come with a big financial penalty for the Leagues through both reduced TV income and gate receipts

sorry pal,  but this is really naive. If a lawyers smells blood, he/she will find a client.

There is £750m at stake here. There is no solution that makes everyone happy so litigation is pretty much a certainty.
Players contracts will be up before this is sorted so that needs to be addressed.
The ‘integrity of the competition’ is a total red herring it is all about the money.
Clubs are using the government scheme for the tea lady whilst paying players £100k per week so integrity is clearly not an issue.
Everyone says we are 2/3 weeks behind Italy who are still in lockdown. Say for at least 2 more weeks. So we are mid May before clubs can start training again. 2/3 weeks to get fit is June. That is best case reality probably later.
City have 10 games left to play at 2 per week that is 5 weeks so mid July. (Assume FA cup and Champions league get canned although what is £££ implication of that ??).
Clubs will support self interest. 3 PL teams on 27 points. 3 goals between them. Villa 2 points back with a game in hand.
Season can only be finished by playing games. That can only happen if clubs extend contracts but that won’t always be practical.

The only solution is to void the season other than the £750m issue.

I think all contracts to be automatically extended by one year to june 2021, and this season to be finished by then across all domestic and international competition

The 20/21 season won't happen, it doesn't need to

Everyone to be fresh for the Euros then business as usual

This is the winter break they've all been crying out for

The problem is clubs like Burnley having to give players they do not want 12 months more money. Next season being cancelled has bigger financial implications than this as would be more games.

I tend to agree that this one will be finished eventually but it’s not looking good for next season, If you lose a season then you lose a huge amount of revenue

The £750m issue finishing this season becomes an even bigger financial issue next year

The only way they get through it without losing any Revenue is finishing this season and playing next season as normal, the longer this goes on the less likely that is

As each month passes more money is lost through no Sky Sport or BT Sports subscriptions that would have otherwise been paid and handed over to the PL. Even if they are going to try and start condensing seasons to get the games in, are they then going to charge more for TV based on more games per week, unlikely

Sooner or later football will need to tighten its belt considerably to deal with this crisis

I’m sure you will find lawyers willing to take it on, but on what grounds do they think that they could win a case? You can’t just say it’s unfair, not sure that counts as a legal argument

It’s in the rules that a season must be completed by a set date, think it’s July 1st, if this goes on beyond that date then legally they could abandon the season and go again surely

At the end of the day, the league is just a representation of the clubs, when we finally get the green light to play football we can have 2 simple choices 1) finish the season 2) start a fresh

One club, one vote and if you don’t like it then you can go and join another league if you want

That was changed on 19th March.

”The FA’s Rules and Regulations state that “the season shall terminate not later than the 1 June” and “each competition shall, within the limit laid down by The FA, determine the length of its own playing season”.

However, our Board has agreed for this limit to be extended indefinitely for the 2019-20 season in relation to professional football. Additionally, we've collectively agreed that the professional game in England will be further postponed until no earlier than Thursday 30 April.”

Though maybe if this season was void i think there'd be a case for not giving out any remaining prize money, or giving less money out next season to make up for what was already handed out during a void season

Then the likes of Burnley have to pay all their players next season with a massive chunk of their revenue missing

One way or another, i think this season is finished to balance the books

Then they can figure out how to complete next season in time for the Euros

Next season won’t get cancelled

I’m guessing a new format will be introduced which people have touched on less cups etc maybe a new league format split etc

And I reckon as a one off it'll make for an exciting season as well.

Course

it’s bloody obvious clubs won’t survive if a season is wiped off that’s just mad thinking

A bit off topic but I feel like there's been a shift in attitude this last couple of days as if the whole of society/government has suddenly got bored of all this. Football openly talking about returning, news and government now turning their attention to exit strategies from the virus.

Feels far too soon to me, hopefully doesn't lead to everyone taking their eye off the ball.

I actually don't believe it will restart. I saw an article saying that from the date they want to start the season, players would need between 3-5 weeks (almost like  pre-season) to get their bodies fit. It isn't about fitness per se, more about getting muscles, ligaments etc back up to the stress football puts their bodies under.

Be interesting to see what a sports scientist thinks

The biggest enemy is time. The longer this goes on the less chance the season will restart. And don't forget, we will have to have some sort of pre-season because players won't be able to jump straight in to playing. I reckon at least 2 weeks from getting the all clear to restart playing again.

The pools panel suggestion was the funniest thing I've read for ages. Thanks for that.

Haven't the NRL proposed some nuts idea of getting all the teams to an isolated resort to play the season.. let's stick all prem teams on isles of scily.

AFL have proposed something similar involving grouping teams into regions where the virus is rare, such as Tasmania,  North Queensland etc then finishing off in the heartland, Melbourne when hopefully things have settled down by October

I dont think its the length of time as such

Its when they can restart

If its feb/march next year, its simple

Start where we stopped

If its august, more tricky

We can always cram more games in next season but with uncertain exit strategy any large gatherings until at least August or even September will be a no no.

Only two options IMO 1) void the season and start again August or Sept (if we can) or 2) decide the outcome as I suggested before with a panel which seems the fairest way. Some will challenge it but the football authorities will have to get the buy in from all the clubs. Just hope its voided for the predicament we are in.

That causes as many issues in terms of players contracts etc.

You will also need this to work across the world for the big competitions and International time table. So the timing for the UK is not the only factor.

There are 3 goals and no point between 3 teams. One in a relegation spot, 2 just above. Villa 2 points back with a goal in hand no way you get buy in from everyone.

True and it isn't going to be easy for a few but if the football authorities stipulate that is the case then that's what they could do. Your point is good though and that's why hopefully they will void the season and everyone starts again when it is safe to do so for 2020/21

It’s simple until you then realise a whole season worth of TV money has vanished into thin air

The issue of losing £750m this year becomes one of missing £2bn next year

I agree though, if it’s re starting early 2020 it’s the most feasible plan
