Mowbray must have been the dirtiest player ever for Bolton, he was fuckin nuts.

I'm sure he got sent off one friday night at an away game (Tranmere???) for nutting the winger, who had the cheek to get past him a couple of times.

Aye mate - 'Chopper' Mowbray. I remember watching him from the Lever End one day. A winger had hip and shouldered him down on to the track beside the Burnden Paddock. He kept running but crouched and then suddenly ran up the slope and king hit the winger knocking him about 10 feet into a pile. If I recall correctly, the referee was only game enough to book him.

Had a quick google about Mowbray as he was just before my time, found this recollection from a young Southport player who played against him, sort of backs up your memory.

Mowbray, Henry Played for Southport Reserves against Mr Mowbray after I left school at 16 around 1971-72, he was playing for Bolton Wanderers 'A' team in the Lancashire League (2 steps down for him, from the first team) I was brought on as a sub and had better success than the previous young winger who I replaced. Mr Mowbray had been very complimentary to me after a couple of crosses, efforts at goal and a corner or two smiling and saying 'your good aren't you? 'After about the third or fourth time I had 'laced' him and nearly created a goal for our team, he turned to me, smiled and said if you do that again I'll break your f...king leg. As he was smiling when he said this, I was bemused and gave him a confused mid-puberty look, to which he replied 'now f..k off to the other wing'. Acting on reliable first hand information I duly obliged the experienced smiling Mr Mowbray. His information was more than valuable as I spent the remainder of the half in the more convivial company of the left winger of 'our' team, who spoke to me incessantly saying 'go back to your own wing'. After the game I was interrogated by the manager and more experience old pro's Alan Taylor (ex-Blackpool goalkeeper) and Sandy Brown (ex-Everton defender) why I vacated a position where I was having such success against a reputable rugged 1st Division defender who hadn't been able to get near me. I had to admit I had been threatened by this beast of a man (10 years older than me with hairs coming out of his nostrils and ears, and thigh muscles like tree trunks) smiling at me and threatening to do me harm, (at my tender age and boyish physical stature - 5ft 5in & size 5 shoe!) I basically 'shit' myself and run. The manager and older pro's howled laughing at my predicament and advised me I had fell for the oldest 'con' trick in the book, and that was for Mr Mowbray to have an easy game and not look bad. Needless to say I never got 'bullied' out of a game again and learn't not to listen to what other players said to me. Thanks Henry, you didn't break my leg! but taught me the power of words, but I learnt the meaning of the saying 'actions speak louder than words' The good old 70's eh!

I'm still amazed that shit bag was with us for as long as he was, was it for about 8 or 9 years?

A long time for sure, didnt Coyle get offered 7/8 million for him? Just checked it was 4 million.

who remembers Duong Thach!?

Don't think he was ever likely to be any good, we were just excited by how exotic it sounded to have a Vietnamese-Swedish wonderkid! Looks like he went to play for a short spell in Cyprus then the Swedish third division. Doesn't even have his own Wikipedia page. He's no Emanuele Morini.

Wheatcroft, even

Bizarre to think of it now but I seem to recall he was touted as quite a big signing at the time and was expected to be a first team player. He was always going to be cursed when he played in a friendly away to Leigh RMI and we mentioned in passing about him being a Utd reject, only for it to turn out we were sat behind his parents. Whoops.

Paul Ritchie (loan signing of big Sam's from Hibs)

Ian Brennan (early 80s signing from Burnley - defender)

Vernon Allatt (signed along with Eric Snookes by John McGovern in 83)

Most of Sammy Lee's signings! Mikel Alonso, Daniel Braaten etc

Kevin Rose (diminutive keeper signed by Phil Neal in 89)

Paul Lodge (midfielder signed to replace Neil Redfearn in summer 84. Not good)

We were in NI for the pre season when we signed Paul Lodge

From everton, looked the part

That was the high point

Paul Ritchie was quality. We did quite well out of loan centre backs in that era with Jon Newsome, Colin Hendry and on to Laville.

Will throw in Darren Holloway for another one of Allardyce’s loan players.

That’s a good one, never even heard of him.

Sunk without a trace didn't he. I suppose when you're signing players on a free transfer from PNE - newly relegated to DIv 4 - it's never likely to set the world alight. From memory he was our only Summer signing in 84 as well!

Sean Davis, 3 years....3 games...

I was thrilled when we signed him. Experienced PL footballer, with best years possibly still ahead, 29 at time of signing. Another fucking knee injury.

That Holden podcast recently, he criticised the treatment he got. I'm wondering if the surgeons who treated BWFC knees at the time were winging it a bit when you add Sean Davis and Mark Davies in too.

He had a goal disallowed too.  Our ex keeper John Platt was in goal for them.

A group of us had smuggled some large bottles of cider in that day (we were 17 and the offy didnt ask too many questions).  We necked em before kick off and I remember that disallowed goal because one of the quieter lads in our group shocked us all by launching one of the bottles in protest.  It smashed on either the goal post or the fence at the front and set the scene for what was a pretty wild day.

I must have been stood in front of you because i remember that bottle flying overhead and smashing into the fence.A similar thing happened after Burnley away on the opening day of 82/83. Bolton fans were waiting for the gates to be opened onto the main road and some twat hurled a bottle from the back which smashed against the gates.Throwing bottles over your own is bad form!
