On the pitch

Surprised nobody's mentioned my first 2 at Burnden.  Sheff Wed 82 (avoiding relegation).  I remember being amazed how terrible the pitch was, very uneven and loads of sand.  Wigan in Freight Rover semi, it wasnt easy getting on with those fences up in early 80s but loads did.  I literally couldnt believe we were on the pitch singing Wemberley, I didnt think that could happen to us, not realising I'd be going every few years for the next 25 years. Done all the end of season celebration one's since at home, plus Wrexham.

Preston / hull / Peterborough / port vale

and a mention to a wanderersways poster who did a fine job at Macclesfield in the cup😀

That was the first time I'd seen said poster. I think I wad standing at the time with Casino and he asked me to guess who it was. I wouldn't have got it if I'd still been guessing now.

My Brother got arrested for knocking a bobbies helmut off, i wouldnt mind it was the 2nd time in 6 months, got caught at Wigan as well. Never did learn our kid!

It was particularly naughty on the car park, as some builders appeared to left some scaffold bars and rubble behind.

I'd gone down on the overnight train from Wolverhampton to London, as I was working at the FA place at Lilleshall during University summer holidays, ended up kipping on top of mailbags waiting for the morning train to Southend.

I got in the town around 8am and there were already plenty of Bolton around and as you could back in those days, you could almost smell the trouble in the air.

I went on the pitch at West Ham one year. It was the year Miami organised an early start in London and we got a train to a dodgy pub not far from ground.
My mate was at his first ever football game, he slept for the whole game, when he woke up had lost his phone. I was trying to ring but could not get a signal so climbed over barriers trying to get a signal. Fair to say I had had a drink.
Police and stewards realised I was just a knob.

73 promotion with my Dad only time in celebration

Few of us went to Hillsborough one night when I was student to watch Sheff Wed vs Cov in the cup. Never been before and mistakenly paid in at the Leppings Lane end. Cov fans thought we were Wednesday and fortunately a gate was open so legged it. Got a police escort round to the home end to a bit of an ovation

Recorded by the Daily Express for posterity - last home match of the season v Sheff Wed when Alan Gowling had scored two to keep us up. Photographed patting him on the back near the centre circle.

Plenty of other times including with my kid brother when thoroughly pissed at an RL Cup Final game (Panasonic Cup - Brisbane Bronco's vs. Illawarra Steelers early 90's) at Parramatta Satdium. That one's on Youtube.

I was on the pitch for that, one of my favourite end of season games that never gets a mention.  Sheff Wed brought about 4,000 and were expected to turn us over easily, and we expected to go down.  A great 3-1 win with the biggest crowd we'd had for ages (over 13k, good for that era).  Yes it only delayed relegation by a year (similar to the Wilbraham one), but at least we had that memory of beating Keegan's Newcastle at the start of the 82-83.

v Chelsea 1977 when they piled in the lever end. Fighting everywhere

Wolves '77. Say no more

Away at Oldham '78? When we tried to take the Chaddy end and was escorted down the pitch as the players warmed up. Snowing like fuck.

Lots of others my hazy memory only half recalls........................................

Late 80’s and we were on the pitch more than the players!

Best three I can remember

Darlington away, that freight rover game, u could say we were on the pitch twice, we got there late, saw the floodlights in the distance, drove in a straight line towards them, ended up down a cul de sac on a housing estate, parked up, ran straight thru peoples back gardens and over the fence onto the cricket pitch, think Durham played there? Anyway, ran straight across the cricket pitch and into the ground, on their pitch after the game, a 3-0 (?) win.

Burnley away, about 88, there’s a video on utube set to stone roses waterfall that I’m on, chased them all round the town centre afterwards that day

Preston away, they had a mahooosive fence built at the away end, it must have beeen 12/15 foot high, I told my mate I was going over it at the final whistle, I did, he followed me, we were the first two onto the pitch, risked life n limb, about 3 seconds later somebody pushed the gates open and everyone else spilled onto the pitch!

Happy days
