Mentioning Jussi as a top player illustrates my point.  Great saves, poor command of his area, terrible kicking, flapped at crosses, made basic errors (that one at Stockport on the Youtube thread recently wasnt unusual).  I'm not disputing he was a top keeper for us and made saves Matthews couldnt have reached, but very few keepers dont have faults.  Branagan was my favourite FWIW, most reliable keeper I've seen.

I dont have branagan anywhere near the level of jussi

Not saying he wasnt a good un, mind

Jussi was better on his day, no doubt.  Like that save at Villa Park in top corner, and the 2 pen saves at Ewood etc.  Reached stuff Branagan and others could only dream of.  But if we had a play off final tomorrow and I had to pick a keeper who I could rely on, isn't going to drop a bollock or let in long range shots he doesnt get down to quick enough, I'd go with Branny.  Plus he was a great leader who I trusted in big games to bring the best out of others. I always got the impression Jussi was all about concentrating on his own game, not the team's, just my opinion.

I'd like to think we had a few decent Keepers over the years, Barry Siddall, Jim McDonagh, Peter Shilton all very capable goalkeepers.

Also think Ali alhabsi was a decent keeper.

Shilton only played one game

I was impressed with dibble & Clarke

Habsi yes was decent

I've not been arsed to look any of this up, its just from memory: iirc our last game that season was home to Burnley, draw again i think, so if Davison was suspended and shilts didn't play till the play offs, who played in goal in the last game?

Not sure

I’m guessing Davison as back then didn’t suspensions start a week later?

Branagan was much better with his feet than Jussi - Branny played County football as an outfield player in his youth - I've spoken to him about this and he admits that he was a massive beneficiary of the back pass rule coming into force.

Looks like Davison to me and must have been a case of when his ban kicked in as @radcliffewhite1 says. Annoyingly the Bolton News archive only seems to be begin later in 1995.

So i take it Branny was injured?

Also, we only finish 3rd that season, apart from wolves and Reading who was the other team in the play off?

Yes Branagan was injured IIRC.

Reading beat Tranmere () in the other semi final. Barnsley came 6th in what would usually be the last play off place, though we’d have played Wolves regardless.

the other third goalkeeper that year were mark walton. so sez the internet.

i cant remember

Looked like he had his legs on back to front as my mate said.  I can only remember him being in goal for a night match at home to Southend the year before.  We were awful and lost 0-2

Surely we would ahve played Barnsley (3v6, 4v5) if it was top 2+1 up
