In any movement there will be people with different views and opinions.

There is IMO a difference between a large corporate such as SKY getting all over BLM as though it is the best thing since BLT. Than someone hearing the message ‘black lives matter’ and that resonating.

I would be amazed if the majority of people who argued against BLM differentiated between that and blm. A few like Miami did. But I doubt the lad in Burnley who flew the plane over the Etihad was overly concerned about the politics of the West Bank.

Thank you sir, well spotted and realised.

The prison thing and defunding the Police is a funny one.
I think the idea is you spend more on tackling the causes of crime so you need less police and prisons. However whenever anyone spouts this there is never an realistic plan on how you get from today to tomorrow.

"Tough on crime, tough on the causes of crime"

Tony Blair. Right then. Right now. 🙂

Crime won't crack itself.

I can’t think of anything I want to discuss less.

As for defunding police. Fucking Nora.

Defunding the police (like lots of the BLM arguments) is very yank centric and doesn't work in the UK. Where cops have been being defunded by the Tories for around 10yrs now.

In the US cops get shit loads of money and military grade equipment thrown at them and very little training or oversight in what to do with them. Mental health, addiction support and other help for factors behind what drives people to crime are only for those with jobs/money to get health insurance.

The defund cops angle works along the lines of stop giving police all the money and fund services to help folk.

Sorry mate but I don't see that... This thread is titled BLM & in neither your first post, & then your second directed at me, did you say you were talking about BLMuk exclusively. So what exactly am I not reading correctly? Many of the players and clubs would also have been supporting the American movement.

Why should the Premier league be supporting a movement in America?

Police funding does need to go up- get more numbers, but by the fuck, much of the ethos has to change.

Spend less time having to pander to perceived public sensitivities, and get out and do some proper policing.

Amazing policing work with the mass arrests of drug dealers today. Good to see some of their quality investigative work in the news.

Absolutely.

Unfortunately, for me there is insufficient resource put into minor stuff, which enables participants to feel untouchable and grow in criminality.

Partly due to numbers and partly due to ridiculous levels of paperwork and being seen to be doing the right things.

Fundamental things like communication etc need big improvement.

I don’t think it’s about numbers, more ethos

It is in part, but being allowed to police properly would free up a lot of time.

They're demoralised and beleaguered and I have some sympathy.

Unfortunately, from personal dealings over recent times, it also seems to have created a bit of a "can't be arsed" mentality which isn't acceptable, even if it is understandable.

Why not?

- PL is a global corporation. They have their own agenda to combat racism and wanted to show support.

Because the American movement has a political motive

Their own agenda for years has been the kick it out campaign, why not just stick with that?

Defunding the police, what a ridiculous idea. Oh hang on, the Tories have already done it. Next!

Once again, if blaming Tories  for police defunding projects fits your politics, carry on. This all started under a Labour government.

Tory coppers are twice as good as Labour ones, so even if you look at 2016, in real terms that makes it 250,000 staff, which is at least 100,000 more than Labour ever had. In real terms. These days.

A bit over simplistic purely looking at numbers, methods have changed significantly too, with technology playing a part.

However, when it comes down to it, the drop in numbers, especially as population has grown has brought about it's own issues.

I was told once a few years back, that there was one shift during which there were only 2 officers covering the whole of Bolton.

Cuts were made all over the place following the financial crash, and arguments will always continue as the whether that was the way to go, however it's clear that money now needs to go back in.
