Tainted Love - Soft Cell, a classic cover, still prefer the Northern Soul Gloria Jones version.

Fuck me, that's my most hated cover version of all time. When you compare it to the pounding, breathless original that i was dancing to as a kid it just pales into insignificance. The Soft Cell cover was just camp electronic pish imo.

Here we go, it takes me back to 1974 and it's Wigan Casino on a sweaty Saturday all nighter with 2000 pilled up teenagers having the best  time of their fucking lives.

Happy days, if i could have one night of my life back - that's where i'd be. Or maybe Ewood in 1978.

This is my favourite cover of a Smith's song. A bit off the wall - but if you're going to cover a classic then at least do something different with it!

Absolute horseshit.

Stephen Hawking would have done a better version than that.

Let's put it another way, it's probably as a one off, one of the most successful cover versions of all time.

I'm with you, the original is top and obviously the best version as are most originals.  The soft cell version fitted in at the right time, 80's synth and all that, unfortunately never went to Wiggin Casino, know a lot who did though, I was probably to into punk than Northern soul, now I embrace both.

Punk and Northern Soul are my 2 fave genres, i don’t think there’s many of us that are into that combo 😂

I love every version of tainted love, Glorias, soft cell, Marilyn mansons

Don’t forget Ruth Swans version - recorded more than 10 years after GJ's, not as good as Glorias, but better than Soft arse cells effort imo as it sticks to the soul theme.

The Gloria Jones record was reputed to have been played for the first time in this country in Bolton, by Richard Searling at the Va Va

I've not re-listened to this for years. And it almost seems like a cliche to post it. But I really appreciate how iconic this is listening to it back with 40 odd year old ears.

Just so cleverly put together and with a haunting quality from a band who's usual sound was a million miles away.

That is a great shout I’d forgotten all about this Kurts voice really suited acoustic guitar even more poignant now Bowie has passed as well.
