What has happened to our wonderful town centre

Eh? The footprint for the Rock can't be much, if any, bigger than the Market Place. Apart from that and the market it's as shit as any other town centre.

Tbf, they did a good job in concentrating everything into a small area. Bolton need to do similar,  and if the supposed plans come to fruition then it'll be a town centre to be proud of again. I'll not hold my breath though.

Tell you what gets on my tits though, the amount of folk who moan about the town centre yet freely admit they never go there any more. It's the same as folk moaning about certain pubs closing yet they admit they never go in them anyway.

Indeed they did the mill gate has a few empty units these days and does look a little shabby but the rock development is a great layout tbf

if I go bolton shopping it’s over to middlebrook hardly go into town

Own a flat in BTC, bought in 2001. There have been plans for transforming the place since.

Yep. They’ve been knocking down buildings for fun. Surely something will be built in the rubble. I live in hope. I’m naturally optimistic. I bought a season ticket this year.

I rarely go in, and as others say, that's part of the problem.

It became like so many others with chains etc. Then out of town places open up and offer the same.

Vicious circle, loss of identity and individuality. Race to the bottom as online takes over.

Need more folk living there to encourage return of small independent places and businesses offering local employment.

After all this, I reckon there'll be a degree of a re set and some folk might look to reduce commuting time.

Time will tell.

The town centre covers such an insanely huge area. I’m not sure there’s anywhere that hasn’t got similar problems in one way or another, even those touted as successes such as Bury and Warrington.

Realistically there should have been a concentration to use Le Mans Crescent, the Octagon, town hall and and square as a centre piece and build around it from there, but that went for a burton once the bus station moved.

Might sound a little radical - and I’m well aware is 100% never going to happen - but I’d simply knock down huge swathes of it, particularly the outlying areas, and develop it in to parkland. Nice bit of greenery and that and then have concentrated areas of retail, eateries and whatnot.

It has oft been commented upon but before we put the town centre right, we really ought to have the routes into it looking a little more inviting. Every route in, from the North clockwise, Blackburn Rd/ Higher Bridge St, Tonge Moor Road, Bury New Road, Manchester Road, Bradford Road/Nelson Street/Thynne Street, Derby Street, Deane Road, St. George’s Road, all absolute shit-holes.

Might as well throw Halliwell Rd into the mix, then we've gone a full circle.

I agree with you, but i'd guess the approaches to a lot of Northern towns are also a bit shit.

You ever seen Lord Leverhulme's plans for the town centre?

They were  brilliantly bonkers. He offered to pay for the lot.

I thought about Halliwell Road but as it spills out onto Blackburn Road/Higher Bridge Street but I get your point.

Also, lots of streets between these routes in.

This.

Are the journeys into small towns outside of large towns? For example, Horwich; routes in are from Adlington, Bolton x2 (Old Road and New Road), Blackrod, Rivington.

I had to get my windscreen repaired up near China Gardens Mcdonalds the other week. Went for a walk into town cos it was going to take a while. As a woman all I can say is that was bloody scary. Groups of foreign fellas glaring at you and shouting stuff. Was horrible. Plus theirs no budgies anymore 🙄

Do we really class Horwich as a town?  I've always just seen it as a bit of an odd suburb full of 'little villagers'.  It's just a slightly bigger version of Little Lever.

It is a small town that couldn't sustain it's own non league club and is now struggling to sustain another town's league club

cue frank telling you that youre wrong

Not any more Bolton has massively fallen behind.

The new owners of the Millgate have done a grand job in filling units.

And Bury Market is as always the best around for fresh food.

Newport street seemed busy last time i was in town the charity shops and cheap shops thriving. Massive void of fuck all between the town hall square and the Market Place. Even the market place is half empty.

All that said the same is true for the bulk of the other satellite towns of Manchester. Visited most through business in the last few years, Rochdale is especially bad at the moment. Aside from Bury the only one id visit through choice is Blackburn and even there is half empty but there's a good comic shop for my nerdy needs
