Having re read Evatt's comments, I think if you swapped 'man up' for 'grow up', it fits the context I believe he meant.

I'm my mind he his telling him that losing first team football matches has consequences, people ultimately lose their jobs, so to get his head on and to realise he not playing youth/reserve football anymore.

Not sure I disagree with him tbh, the trouble is, is Crellin that good to stop the errors??

Maybe not, but definitely not when his confidence is absolutely shot.

On a general note, not aimed at IE as we dont know what was said, but I still dont understand why a player that's made an obvious error has to be bollocked.  Like Crellin is then going to say "oh yeah boss I didnt realise I'd messed up there, thanks for pointing that out, I wont do that again".  I just dont get what it achieves other than resentment and anger.  Its like that Salford documentary where it showed the manager just bollocking everyone after a defeat and losing control, just makes them look amateurish.  A good manager would just work on it on the training ground and talk it through individually.

Because it’s an emotional game and You want to see a reaction to the anger. It’s not his first clanger either.

That should have been his bread and butter yesterday.

All the work that’s obviously been done on the training pitch with the defenders went down the swanny with that, that should provoke an angry response IMO

Just watched the highlights. Very encouraged. when was the last time we scored a goal from sixteen passes in any league?

We will get it right eventually.  injuries not helping and that linesman yesterday robbed us what a fantastic goal that was. Lets stop doubting Evatt, and Sarcevic, and Doyle and Santos and our style and get behind them. And i include myself in that. weve gone from shed load of problems to just two or three now.

Also our luck will turn. injuries a bummer but we can do this.  Absolutely nothing to be frightened of in this league. We are just assembling a squad never mind a team. 20 new players. As GNR said we all need a little patience.

For the most part, I agree with that. He deserves time and no-one knows how he'll pan out. But, the objective for the season wasn't to score one half decent goal and be 18th in League Two.

Taking into account the league we're in, and our budget relative to the other sides in it... results have been appalling up to this point. If you were making any snap judgements (which you shouldn't) he'd be far closer to the bottom of the list of managers we've had since Big Sam than the top. In fact, he'd be bottom by a clear distance.

You don't know what our budget is

Aye there's Sarcevic and Doyle and maybe Delfounseo but for each theres 4 or 5 with no real pedigree

unless you think we are paying Greenidge and White big bucks

The club claim to be well under the salary cap and there could be some grey areas around that but nobody outside the club knows

Our budget this year will be stronger relative to the other teams in the division than it was when we were in the Premier League, or in the Championship from Lennon-onwards at least. And definitely higher than 18th in League Two. Surely you don't need the balance sheets to know that?

IAN Evatt has apologised for his choice of words in Saturday’s post-match interview at Cambridge United.

The Bolton boss came under fire on social media after saying his 20-year-old keeper Billy Crellin must “man-up” after a series of first team errors.

Speaking to The Bolton News, Evatt admitted he should have chosen his words more carefully but stood by his decision to discuss the Fleetwood loanee’s form in the media.

“The terminology should have been better,” he said. “And I apologise for that if any offence has been caused.

“What I’d meant was that there is a big step up between junior football and senior football and that Billy does have to get to grips with that as soon as possible.

“I have spoken to him this morning and he understands what I meant. He agrees with the sentiment, in fact. So there is no problem there at all.”

Several prominent football voices on had questioned Evatt’s viewpoint, including former Bolton striker Marvin Sordell.

“It baffles me so much. If he thinks his performances have been shaky so far, what does he expect will happen now?” he wrote on Twitter.

Evatt maintains, however, that his words will not have come as any surprise to Crellin or the rest of his team-mates.

“I had spoken to Billy during the week about my concerns and it was the same after the game,” he said. “Nothing I said in the media was any different to what I said to Billy in person.

“Bolton Wanderers fans will know by now that what you see is what you get with me, honesty and clarity. I won’t hide anything. And my players know that as well.

“I fully accept, though, it wasn’t the best choice of phrase and I can’t take that back.

“And I am disappointed that we’re sat talking about this on a Sunday rather than what was a good performance at Cambridge.”

—————————————

I’m fully behind Evatt here and still think he talks a good game and admire his honesty. Yes the terminology could’ve been better, but I still think the world’s gone soft.

Sure but...

A. It's all relative. None of the teams we're playing now have international footballers either, and their players are all cast offs and bargain basement players too.

B. We're not beating what's in front of us.

You're not wrong pal.

Ridiculous to even be rating him at all yet! 20 new players what dont you get about that? no other manager has been in that position. FFS

Maybe, maybe not?

But if really swirling around why not go with the back of two fists, he must be able to get higher than the forwards.

Was just limp what he did

Really difficult to get any momentum to attack the ball via a jump, because it was hanging up for so long- gives a couple of opposition forwards time to do their job by getting in the way.

He needs to get stronger for sure, as he can't keep being physically outcompeted like that.

I said a few weeks ago that IE has similar traits as Keith hill especially with his man management approach

not a fan of it myself let’s hope he knows how far in can push his players

If players buckle so easily due to being told to 'man up' then they aren't mentally tough enough to take us where we want to go. It's not a 9-5 job, it's a job in which having a strong & winning mentality is vital. If Crellin reacts positively then it's job done, if not he isn't the goalkeeper we need.

Totally accept your point there. He's still on a learning curve & his future is on the line, hopefully things will settle down as results improve..... & I'm still optimistic they will.

It's a case of PC gone mad. Did BC go home in tears, or storm out without having a shower ? Probably not.

He might have shrugged his shoulders and said 'fuck me he's right, I deserved that'.

People rushing to stick up for him. He doesn't need that. Maybe IE has lit the blue touch paper for a great season for young Bill.

the last 170 minutes have removed nearly all the pressure that may have been building on him, imo

I'd say the last 95 minutes have relieved pressure.  The first 90 minutes at Barrow have to be in the negative column, if the ref blows his whistle after 4.5 minutes of injury time instead of 5 that result goes down as one of the worst in our history.  A good performance at Cambridge by all accounts - very pleasing and 2 great goals, lets build on it - unlike performances after the only other acceptable game so far, Harrogate.  Bradford is huge for Evatt.

Disagree on barrow

We were even the dominant team in the first 25 minutes

Anyway, i doubt hes under any pressure anyway

Spot on. And if the ref blows his whistle on 94 mins in the Oldham game we’d be on a 5 game unbeaten run, pressure off, just as it should be 😊
