leigh white
Trying from scratch when your mam and dad had gone to work, raking the ashes out and putting some firewood on and firelighters what looked like a big fuck off bounty bar without the chocolate, start putting small lumps of coal on, then yesterdays paper on the front of a small spade to draw the fire, when the paper started turning brown, lump some some more coal on and then put a guard up, and make your way to school. Site Supporter Tonge moor green jacket Posted November 20, 2020 Site Supporter Share Posted November 20, 2020 Funny you've just put this up. Just last night scientists were showing results from tests to investigate emissions from open coal fires. Tiny particulates containing metals found in tissues of the body. House coal to be banned soon, so will be a thing of the past.

That was when newspapers were a proper size... couldn't do it with the tabloids. Best bit was when it caught fire... whoosh 🙂 We didn't have firelighters, just wood kindling. Then we got a gas fire... best thing ever in the morning and you didn't get the blowbacks stinging your eyes!

Wigan and Leigh areas had many more chimney fires than the rest of Greater Manchester area because even after the closure of all the pits the concessionary coal was still being delivered. You could have a valid point there Micky, I was years away from retirement at the time so never looked into it.
