Newton White
As a kid I used to work on the groundstaff at Burnden - I remember chopping the ice and snow off the Embankment to try to get a game on against Everton at the end of the 70's - it was lethal - It was the game where George Wood clattered Peter Reid and lost us the first £1m player. bought my first car (a rusty old hillman avenger) from the wages though. Take Hunt Off
You can find it easily just Google 'The Great game 'by the British Council .Sommat to do with healthy propaganda those guys .Can't get healthier than this .Not all of the footage is at Burnden if you look closely some of the footage of bwfc v stretford munitions workers is at Maine rd (Old Trafford out of action due to bomb damage) not to be confused with thembankment. They do show Lofty scoring at the Embankment though. It was a two legged affair we won 1-0 at home via Lofty then drew 2-2 at Malne Rd.Barras scoring both. Just because the most Bolton fans I've been with at a game must be the 36k for the Fulham match (Fulham brought one coach) - as there's no way we've had a 36k allocation for any Wembley/Cardiff event, and other big crowds at Burnden I'd been in had significant away numbers. So if you were at the Everton game do you beat the 36k? I only remember bits of the game, the Mackenzie penalty miss was the abiding memory. The atmosphere was off the scale though, hairs on the back of the neck were bristling as the teams came out. I do remember the disappointment after being so close to Wembley and I recall an older Everton fan consoling me briefly as we trudged under the bridge afterwards. It was from a free kick given for too many steps by the keeper wasn't it ? Those were the days!
