Our Goalkeeper Situation

The "glass half full" part of me was excited at the beginning of the season but there was that nagging down to earth "what about the defence?" in my head after reading about our new striker signings and Keegan-esque promises of attacking football where we will ship goals but score more.

In the cold light of day you have to stop the goals going in so that the (sometimes few) opportunities up field aren't wasted.

The football isn't particularly great though is it?

Excellent in patches, but even when we were dominating possession, chances, shots and goals weren't exactly common place.

Front two is more like a front 1½.

Seeing his interview for tomorrow, he wants us to be more patient and tire the opposition with passing- which is all well and good, but of late the passing is shit, movement not great, and not creating a great deal in the games, except perhaps in the latter stages.

I'd like us to sign a tall, athletic keeper. Gilks is neither and looks fucked half the time.

No wonder - he’s too old for all this Sat/Tues/Sat bollocks. Fwiw i still believe in Evatt, i reckon he’s probably as frustrated as the rest of us that we haven’t exactly hit the ground running. Like someone said earlier, we need to sort the defence out first, stop shipping shit goals in and take it from there. Rioch did it, Big Sam did it, it’s the first place to start - the rest will follow.

Evatt wants to play nice football

Loads of you wanted nice football

I'm a results first fella and he even has my backing so you fancy dans really need to give him 2 years

Aye, he didn't get Barrow up at the first attempt either

Reading between the lines from IE comments, he’s brought 2 young lads in on loan, he’s intimating the next 2 signings will be more experienced, (hopefully one a keeper) but we’ll have to wait till the end of the window

The point is, Gilkes doesn't want to play or be a full-time keeper, he is happy filling in and is a step up on Casper, which in fairness any keeper would have been.

We need a keeper, Gilkes isn't agile enough, but he is wise enough and does the basics and uses his experience well, but if a goalie doesn't want to play and his head is 100% in it, he shouldn't be playing.

GK should have been the priority position in this January window, there's time yet, so fingers crossed 🤞

Just a big mistake from the off the goalkeeping situation just a basic priority

You can do as much pitty-pat as you like, you can have 75% possession, you can be as fit on 90min as you were on 5min.

One big fck-you 50+ yard long throw not dealt with & it's all for nought.

Spot on

We need to get some towels ready and give the ball boys a couple of under inflated balls to slip in when required

Also should be getting more out of corners,

You remember that early game on ifollow

Possibly league cup

Pretty sure you were well happy with him

Im equally sure i didnt trust him as he missed a couple he came for, partly cos id been told from chorley he was a good stopper but dodgy on crosses

He then made a mistake and he got worse and worse

I reckon hes probably got the ability, just not the temperament

It was one game I thought he did ok in spells, regardless it was a strange signing so little experience

Gilks has to take a lot of credit for our turnaround. Seems like he’s taken responsibility for the Crellin situation and put himself well and truly in the firing line. To go from a position of thinking retirement is round the corner, you’ll probably never play professional football again, to trying to save our season, is outstanding. Both as a player and a coach he’s had such a positive impact.

Agree completely desp, people give our new signings all the plaudits, which is deserved but Gilks has been an enormous presence and is a major reason we’ve done so well. Let’s just hope he stays fit.

Very easy to forget just how much of a short term measure it seemed at the time and waiting for an inevitable mistake that never really materialised. Can’t underestimate how much of an effect Gilks has had on building the confidence of Baptiste and Santos as a partnership.

I only recall him making two mistakes since he’s been in but the difference he’s made to Baptiste & Santos is incredible. He’s the loudest man on the pitch by far

I did mean to type 'underestimate' rather than 'understand' but I'm glad that you knew what I meant!

Always likely to get a mistake or two from a goalkeeper over the course of the season at any level but as a percentage it must be a fraction of Crellin.

Regardless of what division we're in next season, it'll be interesting to see what happens over the summer in terms of the goalkeeper situation.
