Charts have often been poor.

Basically, there is shit every year. For every Bowie there's Mud.

For every Where Do You Go To (my lovely) there's a frog chours.

The Charts were the same until they didn't matter anymore.

Agree. But you remember Mud. The top 10 in the 70s and 80s were rarely infiltrated by acts you couldn't remember.

I know it's an age thing. But still, I do think the quality of acts have diminished.

I even remember Clive Dunne  who, in 1971, topped the charts for a while with “Grandad!”

Challenge is to watch all the way through this YouTube video without thinking, “Shit like this really topped the charts?”

Best thing is, Dunne was 51 when he recorded this which is 7 years younger than I am now! Just fuck off! 🤬

Dead now, another victim of the curse of 'Dad's Army'...

Everyone always looks grubby and sweaty on these old Top of The Pops, even the acts.

I suppose to be expected with weekly baths and clothing 'washed' in one tub of water with Acdo.

Probably stank an' all, with no deodorant and only Brut and Mum body sprays available.

Dunne died in 2012, three months of his 93rd birthday

John Laurie (Frazer) died at 83

William Ridley (Godfrey) died at 88

James Beck (Walker) died at 44

Arthur Lowe (Mainwaring) died at 66

John le Mesurier (Wilson) died at 71

Frank Williams (Vicar) still going at 90

Ian Lavender (Pike) still going at 74

Bill Pertwee (ARP Warden) died age 86

Eddie Sinclair (Verger) died age 63

I get that Beck and  Sinclair and Lowe weren’t old by today’s standards but I’m seeing no curse.

aye, for me, the 90s were the golden era of everything

the 80s were just something I remembred where you mostly sat around waiting, and it looked shit in the photos

but I was young enough to enjoy this

and this

was actually thinking about this the other day

despite finding music in the 90s, all of my favourite bands are either pre/post 90s in terms of their first album

Nick Cave, Prince, Faith No More, Nine Inch Nails

then

QOTSA (if you ignore their first unknown album), Black Rebel Motorcycle Club, early Kings of Leon, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Goldfrapp

can only think of Supergrass from the 90s, and I spose Oasis and Radiohead

Popular music started to die a death with the rise of Stock Aitken & fucking Waterman!

And the start of the "talent shows". Popstars. Pop Idol. X factor. BGT.

The popular music industry in now polluted with manufactured karaoke singers and talentless twats. The Baron Knights wouldn't get a gig today.

Massive load of shit in there except for Nirvana.

I actually saw them, we went to watch Shakespeare's The Merchant of Venice at Nottingham Royal and on the way back to the car dived into Rock City across the road, blagged our way in to extend the night... a night of contrasts!

the Prince one was my first foray away from the top 40 pop

the KLF were ace

Nirvana and Pearl Jam were listened to

Primal Scream, maybe a couple of singles in later life but not at the time

dunno about the rest

except REM, I didn't get them, average pop (though saw them live once and they were ace)

Prince became what Shuggie Otis was supposed to be, I saw Shuggie a few years ago at Manchester Academy. KLF were absolutely brilliant, who else could get Tammy singing about ice cream vans? Did they really burn all that money?

Got into Country in the 90s because mainstream was so crap (except for Hootie & the Blowfish and some of Del Amitri)

Really isn't, anyway discussing the value of music on this forum is like trying to balance water.

Totally pointless, as was saying the 90s killed pop TV...
