Kicking off on Willows Lane

See you never knew the delights of The Aquarius club. Bald Afro's chippy or chatted up the young ladys from Mount St Joseph's when it was an all girls convent school.

Plenty of action  on the tennis courts away from the nuns prying eyes.

Omg, you just described my life between 81-83.

The end of Willows lane between Melbourne rd and Deane Church lane can't be described as Daubhill.

You were shagging on tennis courts when you were 83?

The demographic has changed somewhat...

I used to pass a place on Willows Lane.

I called it 'Camp Bastion'.

Some little Englander with big fences, gates and flagpoles refusing to sell up and move.

Think he had a Land Rover an' all.

No machine gun turret affixed however.

It is still there . Even plant pot men.

Makes me smile when I pass it on my way to Istanbul Shawarma

Still flying the flag, then? Must be getting on for twenty years since the ramparts went up...

It's good Istanbul, belting flatbread and they do olives in the salad, jalapenos and olives and that chicken - belting.

My mate speaks highly of the Afghan place over the road, bit further up opposite Lidl.

You can tell it's an old pub, one that went under my radar.

Kurdistan further down used to be decent, but not been in for years, so I suppose it could be crap now.

That salad is spot on . Freshly laid out each day.

I have the chicken and lamb mixed Shawarma with 2 Nans plus all the salad except humous.  1tub of garlic mayo and 1 of chill.

Great value £6. I cut the Nans in half , makes 4wraps.

Will give your recommendation a try.

But it will have to go some to beat Istanbul.

Never been sure of DAUBHILL/ Deane boundary.

I still reckon it was around Bald Afro's or even further up towards the Italian ice cream place . ( now a religious school).

At one point only ventured up there to visit the " Joke Shop " Across the lights on the way to Morris Green.

Oh and was The Sunny Sunnyside Daubhill ?

Just looked Daubhill , coming up Derby St. Starts where View St meets Derby St.

Then stretches up to Hulton Lane . As you say takes in Swan Land Mill and Sunnyside ON the left. The right side border is Willows Lane . So Bald Afros and the Aquarius were Daubhill.

Mount St Joseph's and Hawthorn Rd are Deane.

Talking about Deane

does anyone remember James Mason filming in bolton at bottom of kirkebrok rd

i think the film was ”a taste of honey “ but not sure

they also filmed up melbourne rd

he told us kids to F off when we asked for his autograpgh

first time I’d ever heard that word, went and asked me mum and got a bar of soap in my mouth for my troubles

edit 🥴

just googled it

Spring  and port wine

and he was a miserable sod in the film too

as ALF said was a shit hole back then too

Another one talking shit, having lived just off Willows Lane until 84/85 it wasn't a shithole at all far from it, from the bottom of Melbourne Rd to Willows Lane and down to Rigby's chippy on Deane Church Lane was decent in the 80's - compared to most of Daubhill from Deane Church Lane down to town it really was a decent area. It started to go down hill a bit in the mid to late 90's.

Willows Pub was decent back in day.

I lived in Brandwood Street (as you will know, just off Willows Lane) all through the 90s. It was always a shithole. Don't get me wrong, plenty of decent folk. Maybe shithole is not the best word, let's say rough and ready.
