An oven bottom is flat and slightly risen

a barm has a risen top

a flour cake . God only knows assume is an oven bottom that’s not risen at all

Like difference between

an Eccles cake

a chorley cake

and a Lancashire flatcake

all contain currants in a pastry

just different pastry and how the currants are distributed through it

A flour cake & a barm are the same item.

A flour cake has nowt on it.

It becomes a barm when you add stuff to it, like chips, or fish, or salad......

Lesson over.......

No, no, no and no again

A flour cake is a flour cake. A light and fluffy bread-based simple enclosure for your filling

A barm cake has added barm. Barm is the foam from the top of brewed beer and other alcohol that is added to help the bread rise

One of the weird things that will always remain with me was the chats that I had with Mollie Bentham in her shop when I was a kid in the 70’s. Friday was pasty day and I used to go in with my mum. She would buy a batch of flour cakes and Mollie would talk to all the kids who were in there about baking bread and what all the different names meant. Stuck with me after all this time

Fucktards round here in Manc call them muffins. Sorry @Casinomuffins are Manc shite

Lad at work from Oldham calls it a muffin

So I said right you walk in a chippy and you actually ask for a chip muffin?

Not having it

Chip flour cake?

Chip bread roll?

No you ask for a chip barm, it’s a barm even though it might be served on a oven bottom

Fight me.

It’s a barm.  As @Rudypoojts put you walk in and see oven bottoms but ask for a barm

up here they are called rolls. So it’s a chip roll or bacon roll. It takes a twist if you want a sausage barm/roll though as you then have to ask for a roll and sausage. Which even happens if it’s a square sausage you are asking for when technically you could ask for a square sausage roll Without causing the same confusion as you would asking for a sausage roll. You must ask for a roll and square sausage. Strange the Scottish.

and to finish my two penneth they have started in the last year selling sheldons oven bottoms up here. Which made me very happy. As I can now have a proper BARM with my chips.

Morning rolls in Scotland are a thing of beauty.

Love a stottie as well, when visiting the inlaws, always pick one up

Molly Benthams? Blimey, that takes me back. Was lucky living near halliwell Rd as there was loads of decent butty shops. Loved Mandys.

I've always called them barms but have bought from shops that called them flower cakes.

The worst are those in the cheshire/Stoke borderlands, a batch?! I ask you.

Don't get me started down here. They do sell buns at chippies but they are of the small hovis kind. Nonsense. Plus everything is a roll. To me a roll is a crusty thing you serve with soup.
