If it takes a painted roundabout to make you feel more patriotic, you were probably never a patriot to start with. I feel British 100% of the time. British flags are lovely. I swell with pride when I see them. But it’s an individual thing. Considering the people now drawing red crosses everywhere claim to be doing it as some sort of “free speech” beacon, it strikes me that they’re missing a vital point. if I don’t want to paint a roundabout, or find it fucking weird, then I’m free to say so. Yet these free speech warriors then tell me I’m a traitor and I must love immigrants and rapists. The cognitive dissonance is startling with these folk.5 likes

Words from Paul Embery - a man of the left, Labour member and former senior union official. Lets see who is the first to respond with a "sneering contemptuous caricature of working class people" At the weekend, I drove along the A12 through Essex – a route I know well. In the hour or so that I was on the road, I spotted several St George flags hanging from overbridges. I’d never previously witnessed such a spectacle. And then, driving through a village near my home a couple of nights ago, I saw a flag affixed to a post outside the church. It wasn’t there last week. Something seems to be happening out there. The ‘Raise the Colours’ campaign has plainly caught the wind. I don’t think any of us knows for sure where it’s heading, but it doesn’t take an expert to understand where it came from. Ordinary Britons know that our immigration and asylum system is utterly broken and are exasperated at the failure of successive governments to fix it. They see that globalisation and open borders have forced rapid – perhaps irreversible – transformation on their communities, and it makes them uneasy. But it isn’t only that. They have also had enough of ‘asymmetric multiculturalism’ - the unofficial doctrine of the liberal-progressive elite, which decrees that minority nationalities and cultures must always be enthusiastically celebrated while the majority nationality and culture must be downplayed. This is never said openly, of course. But public policy over recent decades has ensured that this has been the effect Throw in nearly 20 years of economic stagnation, falling living standards, diminishing job security, a chronic housing shortage and failing public services, and you have the perfect storm. Sooner or later, those who felt they had lost most from these seismic economic and cultural shifts were going to react. The flag crusade is just a part of that reaction. We also witnessed the blowback via the ballot box with the Brexit vote, and then on the streets after the Southport massacre. And we see it, too, in the major political realignment that is taking place, with Reform UK’s surge in the opinion polls and its hoovering up of support from significant chunks of the working classes, including voters in traditional Labour strongholds. The elite class and its outriders among the commentariat hold their heads in their hands, believing that this all heralds a return to the dark days of the 1930s, when fascism was knocking at the door and racial supremacists were on the march. Their catastrophising has reached hysterical proportions and is quite often laced with invective towards the working class itself. Witness, for example, a post on ‘X’ which, at the time of writing, has attracted almost a million views and nearly 10,000 likes, reads: ‘The English working class has been so brainwashed by the right-wing media for more than four decades that it completely lacks the critical skills to identify propaganda and imagine a better future.' What a sneering, contemptuous caricature of working-class people from the commentator (who naturally displays the EU flag in his ‘bio’). One that paints them as low-IQ dupes with no agency and no ability to form their own opinions on the basis of their personal experiences and powers of reason. I do wonder how many of those who level such attacks on working-class voters have spent any length of time engaging with them or attempting to understand their lives. If they did, they would find that these voters are often far more intelligent and nuanced in their opinions than they are given credit for. I recently had a few tradesmen – a couple of painters and decorators and a carpet fitter – working in my home. At various points, I fell into talking with each of them about politics. We didn’t agree on everything, but their opinions were plainly thoughtful and considered. On issues such as Ukraine, immigration and free speech, their arguments challenged establishment orthodoxy – but in a way that was well-informed and subtle rather than obnoxious or crankish. What came through is that these guys, all of whom had working-class roots, were decent, productive members of society who felt that the political establishment didn’t really care about them or their opinions. All were tempted by the message of Reform UK. None had a good word to say about Labour. As a person rooted in the labour movement, that saddened me immensely. It is the alienation felt by people like this that has driven the ‘Raise the Colours’ campaign. The proliferation of flags across the country represents a cry from the forgotten millions. They are saying, ‘Hey, what about us?’ Sure, the far-right will leap on the campaign and perhaps even try to hijack it for its own ends. But it would be a gross error to conclude – as many on the left have already done – that anyone supportive of the initiative must be imbued with extremist politics. ‘Raise the Colours’ does not signify the advance of fascism. Instead, the hoisting of every national flag by an ordinary citizen represents a small act of resistance. And that in itself tells us an awful lot about where we are as a country.4 likes

If you want to play 442 one of the front men has to be really good at pressing, like Dion was. Cant have 2 strikers with Dalby and Burstow, they'd get bypassed really easily and our centre mids would be scrambling around too much, leaving them less likely to dictate play or carry the ball. Only situation it's good is chasing a goal last few mins like against Lincoln when we can use the rest of the team to go all out pushing up. There's a correlation between the gradual death of 442 and pitches becoming much better. Occasionally been done since then like Simeone's Atletico but the entire team have to be machines.2 likes

The Epstein list could either exonerate or condemn him, if he was comfortable in his innocence he could release the documents he was very vocal about releasing. The allegations have increased since this evidence he was very confident in suddenly was non-existent/made-up/too volatile to release (depending on his mood)2 likes

Not sure if there are any more squads to be announced? (eg Forino, Gale, Duberry??). England haven't announced their's yet so we might lose McAtee. I just want to know one way or t'other for making plans for that weekend.2 likes

The photo is 7 years old. It’s amusing seeing it being spread on social media by people who blame social media for spreading lies. 😊 A simple google search brings up this. This image, shared on r/fakehistoryporn, humorously depicts a "Condemned plague house during the Black Death (Circa 1350)" by showing a door with "ENGLAND" written in a cross shape, mimicking the appearance of a quarantined house.2 likes

I see Bliar attended the White House meeting discussing the post war prospects for Gaza. I know his history so can see the evidence of his familiarity with the region. Still astounds me that he has any sort of accepted public persona. A rat if ever there was one. He was instrumental in bringing significant death and destruction to the region and the birth of repulsive entities like ISIS with his lies. It will be over soon and Trump knows it. The final play coming when Gaza City is cleared of murderous fanatics and what is left of the hostages are (hopefully) finally freed.2 likes

You hear the term 1 club man thrown around. Hardly ever now but int thowden days you would. But I will put good money on that no other "1 club man" would come close to this. Assistant trainer. Chief coach. Caretaker manager x2. Manager. Chief scout. Administrative manager. Executive manager. President of the club. Btw, I never knew he had a stone in Turton.2 likes

Not really sure what that means. Is it kind of the same as calling someone thick, racist, gammon etc without actually knowing the person. Basically everyone on each side spouting shite to one another ... its all pointless1 like

We've signed wingers this off season to allow us up play primarily a 4231. You can't play two up top with 2 wingers. Barely any team plays 442 anymore, and those that do certainly don't have two out and out wingers playing in the 4. How do you realistically expect us to line up with two forwards playing?. We've all seen enough of three at the back and wingbacks. I just don't see a world where we can play two up top from the start. Course there will be times when we are chasing the game but no way we regularly go 2 up top. You can't just not have an attacking midfielder In this set up . If mcatee and Randall aren't up to it, it'll be try someone else in the squad in the 10 for a few months, before addressing it again in January.1 like

Recently did a weekend in Abersoch. I’ve heard and seen all the hype about it so thought I would give it a whirl. Absolutely loved it. Did ”glamping” in a safari tent, the kids loved that. Couple of beach days, jet skis boats etc. had a 3 day pass for the Warren which was good as they had their big end of season party. The weather was belting whilst we were there, can’t wait to do it again next yet and I’m currently pricing up camper vans to really get in the Abersoch clique1 like

2 lads who I worked with in 1988 or so, Chris had a big lump on his neck and I remember telling him you should have that looked at, Phil working in estimating went through the same and wore a baseball cap as he hair went thin. Kevin got throat cancer about 10 years ago, I'm still working with him, we had professional difference of opinion only this week... we're all still pals. Wife's brother who has lots of health issues was treated recently and is currently recovering from the treatment, I don't believe it's an easy ride but you don't have any alternatives but to get on with it. Wish him well, I believe it can be beaten1 like

You're right, in the desire to modernise and play a certain way there's been a lot of overestimating what L1 players can do and forgetting about what they struggle with. Long throws have come back into fashion even at the top level recently, Arsenal score half their goals from set pieces, there's hope that formations like 4-4-2 might become in vogue again and we might see more of the ball being put into the POMO rather than tip tapped about in the middle third1 like

My exes partner has just be diagnosed with throat cancer. Had a lump for a month and didnt get it checked out because he was busy and doesnt ever go to the Dr's. Id rather get the news as early as possible to be honest, no one likes going but at soon as I got to 45 thought id best do regular checkups.1 like

The rule last season was 3 or more call ups and the club had till Sunday 17:00 the week before to call the game off . So depends if inwood counts with it being under 21 and him not featuring in the league this season to get the option in the first place . unless the rule have changed this year1 like

What you on about now? Israeli is currently being run by one of its most extremist governments in history. Just look at their support for new & expanding settlements. It’s hardly surprising that these organisations are going to spread propaganda & distract from the truth of this war. Their statements are regularly contradicted by NGOs, witnesses & the reports of international organisations. That doesn’t mean everything they say is a lie. But Christ, claiming groups like COGAT always tell the truth is some next level naivety. My ‘narrative’ is just based on the evidence out there. I support Israel’s right to self defence & to exist. I also support Palestines right to sovereignty & to exist in their homeland. I don’t support the extremist tactics of terror groups like Hamas. But I don’t see the extremists currently running Israel as any better. Their denial of Palestinian sovereignty & their continued land grabs amount to ethnic cleansing. This war clearly has an agenda for further occupation & the denial of Palestine’s right to exist.1 like

I have always wondered at what stage in your life you think right, I'm gonna buy a flag pole, erect it outside my house and fly a flag. I barely have the time or energy to cut my grass nevermind go to all that trouble. A guy opposite me has one. Normally a union flag but then changes it to different memorial type thing. Same bloke cuts his headge every day in full PPE.1 like
