  1. During the Luton cup game (attendance 11k ish) I was explaining to my grandson that cup games back in the day attracted larger crowds than league games as the FA cup was considered to be the ultimate prize. The rot set in about the same time as the Premiership started & the likes of bluenose playing reserve sides (remember his 2nd eleven losing to York City at Old Trafford) of course that became the norm & very soon they were all at it , us included .

Fast forward thirty years & it’s really gone to the dogs , with attendances for the early rounds barely registering above 6k . Consigned to the past the excitement, unpredictability, spontaneity & downwright enjoyment of the competition reduced to a almost obligatory attendance from diehard fans.

    Baxter, Santos, Sheehan, Victor

All these were starters in the team that got hammered 4-0 at home by Wigan

Bolton haven't failed to win automatic promotion due to injuries,They have failed because the strongest team wasn't good enough and there are better managers in the 3rd Division

You just love mentioning Wiggin .
Why do you refer to ‘Bolton ‘ & not ‘we ?
    Also ‘ they ‘ & not ‘we’ ?
Apart from that good points , red Rog , who do you suggest as manager ?

I get it if Blackburn was accessible to you. Those living in Astley Bridge, Bradshaw, Bromley Cross, Turton etc., etc. I assume a few fans lived nearby.

But to me Blackburn was place beyond my school in Astley Bridge & had a funny shirt. I don't recall ever meeting one person who supported them. No car in our family & so, though I went to Ewood a few times, I left immediately. Plus school games included QEGS & St. Mary's. The first time I went to the town itself I was in my 20's & to this day have been barely a handful of times.

The BEN used to report on them, as they did Bury. But as rivals they barely registered.

It’s not just about geography is it ? Blackburn are historical rivals .

33k on Burnden in around 1972 when our average gate was around 11k .

That was a top of league three clash, not to mention 27k on Ewood when we sealed promotion to League One.

As a Horwichite I knew at least a handful of local Dingles.

    Not rivals my arse!

I think it depends whete you lived. I was Horwich, so Blackburn meant very little to me. Bury were rivals but my uncle played for them.

Preston, maybe but I never felt nasty about it.

Stretford, absolutely, but be rarely played them. Citeh ... meh. When Wigan appeared, yes, hated it.

The Trashmere years, their club, manager & fans created that. May they rot.

Wolves, a trail back to our glory years & their fake use of 'Wanderers'. Plus games always seemed to be important.

Guess that depends on your age , I’m also from Horwich & Blackburn have been & still are a very big rival. In the late sixties they were our main opposition in terms of off-field entertainment. Mainly because both our main rivals were playing at a higher level ie Burnley & The rags. PNE was always a good day out as well but not quite the edge that a visit to Ewood had.

Blackpool was always moody to say the least & I’m talking before the lad got killed. As for City , wrong side of town for me to feel that stressed although beating them was always ace. Think Wiggin have filled a bit of a void but if we play Blackburn anytime in the near future I think they will take back the mantle of our main rival.

  5. Will renew tomorrow in NSL .Watched all the cup games in WSL & it’s a better view  .I would probably move there , but my grandson isn’t keen for obvious reasons (far too sedate & quiet) so until he joins the yoof in ESL I’m in NSL where some old nutters go to behave badly unfortunately.

  6. Great performance today , totally unexpected & aided by a team that wanted to play & take us on. Respect the opposition for that. No shithousing hope they stay up could have been a 7-4 scoreline or worse maybe .

Just a timely reminder that football is about entertainment, & unless we forget about our football club surviving at any level.

Blown far too much smoke up Readings arse , so fckg smashing from all our eleven on a hiding to nothing , we can still do this folks

Know nothing about the game but we need to be winning every match at this point. Outside of Pompey and Derby we should be beating everyone.

There was another team on the pitch , a horrible team to play against on a postage stamp of a pitch .Only Oxford in the top eight have beaten them on their own ground.
It’s actually not over yet & I agree we need a massive upturn in form but Christ what we need is for our supporters to get right behind these lads & stop whinging .

  8. If they reduced away allocation, they could accommodate safe standing in the South stand or half of it .Nobody inconvenienced & would improve the atmosphere plus negating the gobby away fans , who could be seated upstairs.

  9. Been on that terrace , absolutely massive but sparsely populated that day 1-1 draw FA cup tie early seventies .Stuart Lee for us I think diving header , Arthur Horsfield for them he seemed to score all of their goals. Replay we won 4-0.

  10. Derby shithoused a win with depleted personnel, goalie was their star man.

Warne changed his system at HT to thwart our flow & Wilson proved very effective down our left , said it before but Iredale being naturally left footed is a better option than Toal who stutters with the ball on his left peg .Not saying Toal shouldn’t be picked , he’s a good defender but for me on his correct rhs.

The bog standard subs at seventy minutes have been tedious for some time , & seldom improve us especially when chasing games, the exception being Barnsley although the first change ( bringing Iredale on ) was injury forced.

I thought we were easily the better team yesterday but we failed mainly with final pass / shot.

Correct. Watch the game and be in bed for 10. Why would you not do this

No chance of that , head buzzing with either fear & trepidation on losing or buzzing with replays going through your head when winning.

Need a strong nightcap or several before hitting the sack .

Unless of course some horizontal jogging is on the menu.

    Agree

    But I don’t think it’s a bad thing.

13/14k home fans at night games ain’t bad.

A lot of the folk missing with the cheap tickets will be kids/OAPs. But for the cheap tickets they probably wouldn’t be there at weekends when we get 19/20k on.

I regularly have 2 missing on night games. Eldest won’t come back from Uni and my dad (83) won’t turn out at night. But the cheap tickets get them there on a Saturday.

Good points , I have a few neighbours with ST ‘s who only do the early season night matches .Sometimes they piss me off because it seems they take the easy option but ultimately they buy in so who am I to castigate them ?

In any case , it’s more less a function of getting older . I used to prefer night matches when I was younger , there seemed to be a better atmosphere than Saturday matches , now less so .

I don’t think the absentees in the main affect the atmosphere much , last night it was good , a little flat later when we were five up & a lot of ‘older’ folk thinking about getting off the car park !

  13. For me the game changed when Cogley went off , Jones moved over & Iredale slotted in on the left. We upped the pace , won second balls & there was plenty of space suddenly available particularly on the right where Collins really got into the game supported well by Jones. Maghoma coming on helped the flow & it would have been a travesty had we not got anything from the game.

GT did fuck up for their first , plus he was on a yellow but what a performance from him that second half given the baggage he was carrying.True grit that lad plenty to learn but probably our most improved player , even though refs seemed to have his card marked. His foul was tame compared to the late one on Sheehan were the referee gave a bounce-up!

I said I would comment win, lose or draw and I will. My game isn't to gloat either and its a one off post. The way we play at home was exactly on show last night ...it fucking infuriates most of us but we sit back , allow the opposition uncontested ball and say what you got ? Well the answer will not be popular with you but it's very little. Your play is excellent and very tidy to watch but it is hurting nobody and honestly I thought we had better chances in a 5 minute spell than you had all night. Ridiculous decision to take that lad off who looked excellent.

Can you go up ?...ofcourse you can but you need to sharpen up and go for the throat with a bit of urgency and you'll be reet, but fanny around with all the possession and it only takes 1 mistake and, well you know. We have nothing to play for and could be stuck in this piss poor league for years so may not play you again for years but when we meet again I'll have a catch up in the run up to it ( that's if I'm still drawing breath ).

    Good luck and bon voyage.

Spot on , some on here think you actually were forced onto the defensive !

  15. The thing is we got done tactically by an inferior side .They let us have the ball had two lines of four .They would probably have changed formation if we had managed to score , they knew our weak point when they put an attack together having brought on the clever but rotund  Humphries  & the loanee from Fulham (who had some attacking flair ) in the second half.

Their manager probably calculated we would huff & puff with our pedestrian possession football but also they might get a chance or two on the turnover.

Even better at 1-0 up they could continue to defend knowing we would not change our style of play despite making substitutions.

  16. Cameron & Bod get brought on but do we get any crosses in (exception Ogbeta) no we pass the ball incessantly between Toal & Santos even with only minutes to go.
Every other team in the league would go direct with ten minutes to go at one nil down its not rocket science, get crosses in , win second balls & fucking shoot now & again.

Inexcusable that we failed to lay a glove on them after they scored.

Our right side of Jones & Cogley was toothless in attack & well at fault for the goal very similar to Saturday when Bod found himself at right back & the opposition played a simple ball inside him.

  17. Dempsey & Iredale show they have battling qualities , surely those assets are what we need tonight?

Also Toal as left centre back is awkward to say the least

Looks like we are going all out attack , very brave of Evatt , hope it works.

Is there a clip doing the rounds of Santos winning the ball? I can’t believe there’s folk saying he won the ball and it wasn’t a penalty, have the rules changed?

There was at least some doubt?
    But a red card ?
Watching it live it was not a heart in the mouth moment for me , just thought he had done well to get the ball out for a corner.

Gobsmacked with the red card , the ref was an utter cunt the whole ninety minutes , his total bias was beyond belief.

Wigan have no fans because the folk hero in Wigan is Platt Wazz bucked-toothed banjo plucker George Formby, famed for throwing talcum powder on pub floors and sucking uncle Joe's Balls.
