  1. I admire the fact that the victims families have not given up on pursuing the truth about police lies, inadequate planning for such a big match, appalling condition of the ground and an appalling response to a tragic situation. They were right to do it and I'm glad the truth has been uncovered.

What I have a problem with is that the collective scouse nation have completely exonerated themselves from contributing in any way to what happened. It's like saying heysel was caused because there wasn't any segregation.

And i would feel the same if any club from any city in the country reacted in the same way.

    Yep.

  2. There's an awful lot of sense being talked in this thread and ALL aspects of the debate are being discussed.

However, the current public discourse and media coverage seem to obliterate and airbrush the role of some fans in this. By fans I obviously don't mean those who were killed, who were at the front of Leppings Lane having arrived at the ground on time and with tickets.

Mad-made catastrophes happen when a series of things happen, always involving incompetence and thoughtlessness. South Yorkshire Police fall in to those categories. Sheffield Wednesday do (though so would most football clubs in the 80s and before), the FA do (and no doubt still do at all kinds of levels!), it turns out that the Ambulance Service hardly covered themselves in glory that day either. But can it not be acknowledged that the behaviour of some of the fans also made a contribution? Yes they were all directed in to the central pens. However, did they have to turn up late and act in a disorderly way outside the stadium instead of queueing properly? To my mind that started the chain of events. Had this not happened the Police wouldn't have had as much opportunity to display their own glaring faults and failings. Why do people who raise these issues suddenly have to be iconoclasts?

  3. I can remember JT scoring against Bolton a couple of times. Certainly he scored a brilliant goal against us for Lincoln in one dismal night match. Slotted it in to the Lever End nets. I'm pretty certain he scored against us during one of his spells at Preston as well. Despite the fact he played for quite a few clubs and made more appearances for PNE than Bolton, we certainly seem to be his favourite club from his career.

  4. That season ended in relegation I'm sure the turning point was sending Whatmore back we were excellent in the Leeds and Newcastle games, what a shocking decision not to spend 12 grand, and who can forget that last day defeat at Charlton i shudder at the thought it resulted in years in the wilderness.

You're right, it was a poor decision. Followed by an equally poor one to sell Tony Henry to Oldham for next to nothing. That move led to us scoring about three goals in our last seven or eight games with the likes of Neil Redfearn and Warren Joyce making appearances at very early ages. Lieterally men against boys. All culminated in the 0-1 home defeat to Chelsea and then the Charlton trauma that you mention on the final Saturday.

  5. All my programmes are in the loft but had a quick look on ebay and the 1980 one looks like the one. I would have put money on it being 0-0 though :D I was 9 in August 1980 so it sounds about right....

Too much lager since then has addled my memory....

We played them three times in the early 80s - all in Division 2, the seasons between getting relegated from Div One and landing on our arses in the lower divisions.

First one was the 4-0 with a Kidd hat-trick in 80/81

Second one was a 1-0 win in 81/82 with a Chris Thompson winnner (RIP)

Third was the 3-1 Keegan game with accompanying rioting - 82/83.

  6. Am I right in remembering most of the bedlam was in the Manny Road/Embankment corner? Absolutely thousands of Geordies on the Embankment. More of them than us at Burnden that day I think.

Remembering this through child's eyes, was only 12 at the time.

Given the shit we served up for the remainder of the 82/3 season, this was a pretty remarkable win and a stand-out day all round.

  7. Agree with a lot of what is written.

There is validity in the complaints about 442 v 451 but the real point to make is the personnel.

    (A) I don't rate our full backs (and the back up is unproven in Riley and pretty dodgy on the evidence available of Alonso)

( B ) Not enough physique and power in midfield. Spearing might help but if he gets injured or suspended that's us back to square one.

We've got four strikers, four wingers ........ and three centre backs. (OK I know Wheater is injured and Ricketts can play there but you get the point. The current squad simply does not have the correct balance.

  8. The kind of situation we're currently in has arisen twice before in my times watching Bolton.

    * Early 1980s - when we got it wrong. Ian Greaves was sacked and we spent three years in the old Division Two making poor signings, drifting further and further in to debt, making managerial changes at the end of every season (Stan Anderson and George Mulhall sacked) and ending up in Div 3 for the start of 83/84

    * Late 1990s - Colin Todd had a great squad after relegation but could not get the team to defend properly. Watford play off final. Club drifts further and further in to debt .... and then Sam Allardyce was appointed and did more with less.

Conclusion? We need to follow the latter path by bringing in a street fighting manager who has been, seen and done it at this level and will deliver comparitive success within budget - starting with getting the team to learn the basics of decent defending.

    Names? Billy Davis, Mick McCarthy.

Sadly, the ideal person for the job is currently making a success of managing West Ham.

  9. absolutely gutted for our fantastic support

    you deserve much better

    so far not good enough

..... so he needs to do something about it then and say "thanks and goodbye" to Coyle.

I'm not sure how much I can watch us chucking matches away with utterly clueless defending against pretty average teams.

At this rate we're going to be in the bottom half of the league all season at best.

  10. Im prepared to give him a few more games to turn it round, but if he does'nt then we have to go with experience. someone who has worked in this league and has a history of getting teams up. billy davies, mccarthy, or even reidy , curbishly.

Billy Davies is the best shout I've heard so far.

  11. Am I the only one sick of hearing about 'promising talent', we need footballers ffs not the next Pele. Our problem is now and not in 2-3yrs time when these 'promising talent' youngsters may or may not pay off.

IS NRC still a free agent?

I agree. Been hearing this since the 70s when I started supporting Bolton. Then and in to the early 80s talent did come through. There's been occasional good uns since (Nolan, Stubbs) but not much else. If a talented generation does come through, we'd best hope we're not in such a mess that we have to sell quickly (a la 80-83).

  12. I think its too early to judge the signings but yesterday was totally dismal.

For us to waltz in to a game like this like it was going to be easy is absolutely unforgivable. It would have been even without the Coyle factor adding extra spice.

Today I feel like I felt after capitulations against the likes of Bury, Wigan and Blackpool in years gone by. Its not good enough and he's on thin ice with me now, having previously been a supporter of his.
