  1. Late 70s we did have the 2 crowds over 40k and a handful of plus 30k these were the exceptions I am pretty sure we have not had a plus 30k crowd after 1980. At the end of the day we are what we are and despite an unbelievable last 20 years the town is sadly apathetic to the great club it is lucky to have, thankfully we have Eddie Davies who continues to support the club allowing the few thousand loyal Bolton fans to watch world class players.

But we have averaged more than 26,000 during two seasons in this decade and more than 25,000 in several others. Had the stadium capacity been 30,000 or more I suspect our average would have been higher in some of those seasons (I have 03/4 and 04/5 in mind in particular). There have been several games with capacity crowds of around 27,300 and with a bigger stadium those gates could easily have been larger.

The club certainly needs to work hard on sustaining the support base. As people have said, we're encircled by fellow Premier League clubs and we're very unlucky that two sides who would otherwise be lower league fodder (Blackburn/Wigan) found mega-rich owners. The club can't take support for granted within Bolton's traditional geographical support base as used to be possible before 80s. (traditional support base including far more than Bolton - Westhoughton, Atherton, Tyldesley, Leigh, Walkden, Chorley, Wigan etc etc)

  2. We wont get allocated anywhere near 27K for the Final (should we get there). Your looking at more like 19K/20K

I very much doubt there have ever been or ever will be 27,000 Wigan Athletic fans in any one stadium to watch Wigan Athletic.

A 27,000 following to Wembley for Bolton is disappointing. To Wigan it would be stratospheric.

  3. Let's put things into perspective.

The populations of Bolton and Stoke appear to be broadly similar BUT:

Premiership teams within a 30 mile radius-

Bolton: Man Utd, Man City, Liverpool, Everton, Blackburn, Wigan

    Stoke: None

I think the point you make is central to our crowd-pulling issues. I also believe that the 1980s being a lost generation on the pitch led to a lost generation of fans off it, and we still feel the effects of that. By which I mean loads of lads my age (late 30s) supported Liverpool or the Rags back in 80s and still do.

  4. Don't we get about 27K if we get to the f****? So its dead simple everyone who goes to the semi is guaranteed a f**** ticket and the season ticket holders who couldn't be arsed going on Sunday miss out.

Its also about 10,000 more than Blackburn took to their semi in Cardiff in 2005.

  5. I was there that night, but reading that report has sent a tingle down my spine, the memories come flooding back.

ITV have some footage of the goal that night. Its from an odd camera angle (from the running track at the edge of the pitch!) but you can clearly see the celebrations in the home end behind the goal! Not sure if there's any footage of the rest of the night. ITV certainly covered the following match at home against Fulham when we clinched the Division 2 title in front of 34,000 at Burnden.

  6. Will never forget that night at Ewood. Would love them to get relegated if only for the sacking of Allardyce and those egg headed no nowts who took over.

This is a pretty good account of that night.

I'd settle for 0-1 again towards the end of April!

Just hope the fact we have a midweek fixture previously and they don't doesn't affect things.

  7. How many did we take when we won promotion? we had every part of the ground.

There was 27,500 on at Ewood that night with somewhere between 15,000 to 20,000 from Bolton. Hard to judge exactly because, as you say, Bolton fans were mingled in with Blackburn all over the ground.

Can't stand Blackburn, hope they go down. Couldn't give a monkeys about them being a 'North-West' team.

  8. These are roughly the amounts we've taken to big matches at Wembley or Cardiff since the lower division days

Coca Cola Cup Final v Liverpool = 32,000

    Play off final v Reading = 27,500

    Play off final v Watford = 32,000

FA Cup Semi Final v Villa = 24,000

Play off final v Preston NE = 22,000

    Carling Cup Final v Middlesbrough = 32,000

My prediction is that we'll get close to selling out but not quite do so - probably around 29,000/30,000.

  9. Been a Wanderers fans since about 77. Suffered through the 80s, survived the peaks and troughs of the 90s, enjoyed virtually all of the last decade (don't mention Megson). Only just started posting on Wandersways after all this time!

  10. What about Taylor and Muamba in the middle ? Chungy right and Petrov left.

Mark Davies in when fit and still got Cohen.

I am as gutted as the next men, but come on - we still have a strong squad.

Cohen should not be under-rated. He's no Stuart Holden but he can do a job and deserves a chance.

  11. Quite apart from wanting to win the FA Cup, one of my big hopes for this season is that we win our games at Ewood Park and Bloomfield Road and play a significant part in sending both clubs down. There's nothing I'd like better than the triple crown - Wigan, Blackburn and Blackpool all relegated.

Vindictive? I think not. All three clubs take great pleasure in victories over us and defeats against any of the Lancashire town clubs get me down more than most things as a Wanderers fan.

    Any views?

For what its worth, I bet we get rolled over in at least one of those games given our generally mediocre record in Lancashire derby matches.
